Side stripes

Working on a 72 Olds Cutlass W-30. They have stripes that go from the front bumper to the rear bumper and around the wheelwells. I went ahead and painted the body and doors, shooting 3 coats of universal clear. My plan is to paint the fenders off the car, again using 3 coats of clear. Basically, getting the whole car green. Then doing final assembly of the car, sanding the clear with 800, spraying the stripes, and then clearing the whole car again with 3 more coats.

Is this a solid plan? The body and doors will probably have to sit all winter before I can get back on it to spray the stripes. Should I wait until i'm ready to spray the stripes to sand the car with 800? After spraying the stripes, should I spray a light coat (or 2) of clear just on the stripe area (after the stripes are sprayed), as kind of a tack coat, first to avoid the dreaded horizontal runs that can come? Owner wants the stripes buried under the clear.

Extremely happy with the SPI and Pro Spray products and service, and also the great advice given on this site.

What color stripes? if coverage is good your paint thickness will be minimal and three coats of clear will be plenty to bury.

The stripes will be Firefrost Gold (as seen on the 69 H/O). Not original to the car, but it's what the owner wants. Doubt it will cover good.

The thickness of the tape edge on the stripes will determine how much clear it will take to bury the stripes. You can sand the car with 800 at any time but if there's an extended period of time before you start with the paintwork again just scuff lightly with a grey scotchbrite and clean it well.
