reducing universal?

I'm worried about my first clear job laying down smooth. Whould there be any advantage to adding a some reducer to the clear, and extending the time between coats? Time isn't the problem, I'm in no rush. Lack of experience is the problem

If I was going to try this, how much reducer, and how much time between coats?

I wouldn't reduce it. You paid to get a high solids clear. Thinning it kind of defeats the purpose. Besides, I'm sure Barry spent a lot of time and money making it spray nice out of the can.

Try it out on some small parts first and you will see what I mean. It just jumps right out of the gun and looks beautiful.

universal lays out almost effortlessly. It really doesn't need any reducer. Firts time using it, i wouldn't mess with the reducer. Spray it un reduced first and get the feel of it and get your gun adjustment right.

It is really one of the only high solids clears that i've sprayed where i didn't have to work it to get it to lay good. I used sikkens hs+ clear for years and you had to work that stuff...but if you pushed it too far it would go off the panel.

thanks guys. I'll go for it. I have a couple test panels I can spray to get the hang of it.

I guess I should have mentioned that the heat is what is concerning me as well. I got the very slow activator 90+ but its so incredible hot here in texas I thought it might be a good idea to reduce a little. I guess not

I always reduce it when it's warmer out.
Above 90 deg. I reduce 20%
You'll get a slicker finish but it's easier to run so go easy.
Reduceing it just means you're putting a little less on,
it doesn't reduce the solid content.

I always got more runs when I reduced. But I don't spray it that often...

I think increasing the amount of reducer by definition reduces the solid content of the material. But since UC is high solids, the addition of a small amount of reducer is not going to reduce dry film thickness enough to worry about, especially if more than 2 coats is being applied.

I just sprayed some clear on the underside of my hood (unreduced) and it looks like it's going to lay down just fine.

Thanks for helping me make up my mind.
