Primers and Sealers

I was planning to use the 2K High Build Primer with a thinned epoxy sealer. Then I noticed in the Tech Manual it states "A sealer is not required for this primer prior to painting" in reference to the 2K Regular Build Primer. It doesn't state anything about a sealer on the high build page. Can the sealer be skipped with the high build also?

Sealer can be skipped for any urethane primer. It's not considered best practice, but in a repair environment for example it is done every day.
As Don means by his question, it's important not to have any sand-throughs to metal or even to soluble substrates like the featheredge of basecoat.

Let me clarify. Car is bare steel. My plan was to shoot it with a couple of coats of unreduced epoxy then do filler work. Then high build primer followed by a reduced sealer coat of epoxy before basecoat. The SPI Tech Manual says you can skip the epoxy sealer over the regular primer but doesn't say that for the high build. So, I'm wondering if I can skip a sealer coat of epoxy if I use the high build primer - or is it even advisable. I'm strictly a "backyard" body man so this isn't the last of my dumb questions.

Couple of comments.

You should apply unreduced epoxy over your filler work before high build to keep the high build from shrinking into the filler.

It is best practice to use reduced epoxy sealer before basecoat for best adhesion and coverage. Do you need to? No. It is a good idea? Yes…

Regular or high build primer is meant to refine scratches, After you do your filler work you are almost guaranteed to have some bare metal showing. Make sure you epoxy any raw metal all the way through your project. Ending up with an unbroken finish of build primer is a lot harder than it sounds, Good luck and keep asking questions if you have any.
