Painting an Aluminum Outdrive

F

FULL-THROTTLE

Anyone here ever paint a mercruiser outdrive?
I am preparing to paint my outdrive, gimbal and gimbal housing.

I would like to order everything from SPI
1. Alumiprep
2. Alodine
3. Epoxy Primer with hardner
4. Gloss black paint

Looking for Part numbers form SPI, I could call them, but I am looking for some experince from the field.

Thanks,

Fran

I did one 2 years ago. After repairing and welding the "fin" (likely not the official name) it needed something to coat the raw aluminum, I finished the repair with 80 grit, cleaned with waterborne WGR and put on 3 coats of SPI black epoxy.
Customer never top coated, boat runs in salt water and still looks great.
Your plan sounds fine. SPI doesn't carry the aluminum acid or Alodine. Just call and they will steer you correct on everything else.

SPI has a newer primer that they told me does not need alodine before? Any thoughts

I recognize the alumiprep and alodine is cheap, I just want a decent paint job

One common problem with aluminum is that it oxidizes very quickly..scotchbrite immediately before epoxy no more than 20 min. Imho Acid causes too many problems .
