Materials list for newbies?

Can any of you proffesionals (or accomplished hobbyists) offer some recommendations for sanding / masking supplies. I've talked to Barry and he offered up SPI product recommendations and needed quantities but I have no idea how many DA discs, longboard sheets, tapes, masking papers, tack cloths, what grits, etc...

Crashtech provided the following via PM:

I would start with a good roll of 80DA like this:

And maybe a masking tree like this:

Looks like a luxury but it will pay for itself the first couple times you use it.

The above plus some mixing buckets, cheap lacquer thinner and some free sticks and strainers ought to get you pretty close to being able to strip and prime. Also handy is plastic sheeting like this:

Single use, to cover all the vehicle areas that shouldn't get overspray (epoxy travels) also good to cover tool boxes etc. in the vicinity.

What else should make the list?

Well, I think you are safe obtaining the few things I lined out for you, plus the SPI materials that Barry specifies, which I would assume includes at least epoxy, epoxy activator, and water based wax & grease remover. Which reminds me, you ought to get a box of lint-free prep wipes, too. With that you should have most of what you need to get the vehicle in primer.

Thank you for the additional info! Barry lined me out with all the items you suggested so its time to start buying the supplies. I need to see if there is a SPI stocking distributor in Denver.

If not just order direct from Barry :)

I am a new painter.. Just started tackling our first job. 2004 Ford Excursion. Here is the list that I have bought so far:

Durablock kit
one roll of each sand paper for the durablocks 80, 220, 400
one sleeve of 3/4" 3m yellow masking tape (we used more of the 1-1/2 than the 3/4)
one sleeve of 1-1/2" 3m yellow masking tape
one roll of 18" masking paper (just bought a second roll because the first is getting low)
one roll of masking plastic (3m stuff that is treated on one side so the paint doesn't flake off)
3m dry guide coat
Marson 3m filler ( little goes a long way)
Glazing putty (haven't even used it)
couple of red and grey scuff pads
we already had a box of each 80, 120, 220, 400 6" DA discs
2 boxes of tack cloths
bunch of strainers and sticks
2 gallons of cheap lacquer thinner for cleaning guns and mixing cups
of course a good DA sander and a couple of different spray guns (primer setup and a base/clear setup)

What we have done so far is the body has been blocked, epoxied, primed with 2k, blocked again. The jams were sanded with 400, epoxied, painted and cleared. Next is to use reduced epoxy, paint and clear the body. We have a bout half a roll of 400, and 3/4 rolls of the 80 and 220 left. The sand paper goes a long way. We have both High Tek and Dura Gold brands. Hardly used any discs. Hand sanding worked the best, fastest and was kinda relaxing. Sounds stupid, but I enjoyed the blocking and making it straight.
We used about a gallon of lacquer thinner also.

Hope this kinda helps you with quantities.
