is anyone here spraying HOK basecoats over the SPI epoxy?

S

sprayerman

I'm trying to get away from spraying a sealer and would prefer to use my epoxy as a base for my base coat or metallic hok. How well do these products cross link wet on wet and how long is the window before sanding needs to take place? what grit is recommended for dry hand sanding?

thanks!

thanks, how long can I leave the epoxy before having to sand it and what grit is recommended for dry hand sanding?

I will say this, i have been using spi with hok on a daily basis for years with great sucess. The spi epoxy has a 7 day recoat window but if you are putting basecoat directly on it you had better spray a sealer if its over 24 hours old. Epoxies are generally very chemical resistant so base doesnt bite in well when cured. All this goes for anyones epoxy. Epoxy is great but you need to be careful how to use it when putting base directly on it. I will mix the epoxy 1:1:1 and shoot 1 super tine coat about 10 minutes before my base goes down. Pretty much like an epoxy adhesion promoter. It really is the best way to go.

Amen to that, JimC!
And keep in mind there's the added benifit of increased adhesion
so it will be much more chip rsistant down the road.
Since I started useing epoxy on the bumpers I paint I've
noticed a huge difference in less rock chips.

Thanks for the detailed feedback Jim. I've had delam issues in the past with other epoxies and figured I had to be doing something wrong, even when sanding. I will try your method it makes complete sense.

You've had delam issues of base on sanded epoxy?
What brand of epoxy was that?
I want to make sure I never use it.

of all the epoxies i have ever used, which is not many but the ones i have if its completely cured, sanded and i am puting base directly on with no sealer then it delams every time. it gets so chemical resistant that nothing bites in. its like putting base directly on sanded metal. looks good but as soon as you put some tape on it its peeling off.
