i have read the "Perfect paint job" many times, BUT

I read it over and over, here is my question/problem...
I can't get all the parts primed with 2 coats and then put fillers on in the time recommended. what is the longest I can wait to put on second coat and what is the longest I can wait to use filler? I wish I didnt have to work or do things with the family, then I would have all the time in the world! that's not an option.:p

There are some true experts on this forum, and I am definitely not one of them, but I will try to help.

1. It is always best to apply primer or filler over epoxy within 7 days

2. Between 3 and 7 days I like to scuff it with a red scotch brite pad

3. If its 7 days to a few months old, run a DA over it with an 80 grit pad, and your filler will bond just fine.

4. I would recoat with epoxy if it is much older than a few months.

The simplest answer is don't do all the parts at once. Just strip and prime what you can do in a reasonable time. For weekend work, that usually means one panel at a time.

just scuff and re-epoxy when ready to work. i have parts set for long periods before i get to them. i epoxy them to protect them.

Ok, how does this sound...
Fender completely stripped, 1 coat epoxy underside, next day 1 coat epoxy outerside, 3rd day second coat over all, 4th day filler in dings fith day sand and epoxy. do I need to scuff between with this schedule and when to 2k?

It is not necessary to scuff epoxy before applying filler or 2k primer as long as you are within the window (7 days). Some on this site prefer not to push their luck when approaching the end of the window. If the epoxy is only a day or two old, there is absolutely no need to scuff it. You can if you want. It won't help or hurt.

Give it a try and see what works for you. Just abide by recommended flash times between coats, keep your metal temp over 60 degrees, and work within the 7 day window and you should be safe.

Thats funny Shine....I scratch it too if it's been more than 3 days. What's your theory on getting close to the 7 day mark?

On a side note, I've had a random globs of filler fall on old, unscratched epoxy. I tried busting them off with a screw driver/hammer and it sticks like crazy. The filler usually fails before it breaks loose from the epoxy.

How about try and hang that fender up and spray both sides at once! It'll save you time, and material.

That ol porch dog sure has some way with words, sounds like an old wise man, wait! I do think he knows what he says is the way things are, guess he is wise! Thanks for all the help you have given me on the paint on my 68 vette! Manuel Azevedo
