Fiberglass prep?

Benny

I just bought a '66 MG with a factory hardtop. I don't have any previous experience with fiberglass, but I would imagine the construction method was fairly similar to Corvettes of the same era.

The top has some hairline cracks showing in the gel coat, and looks pretty scruffy. I swung by a couple of bodyshops today to get a quote on repainting it, and they both explained the prep in a very similar manner.

They explained that they would have to sand it all the way down to the fiberglass, then fill the cracks with a fiberglass "resin". From there, it would be a prime, seal, and paint job.

Does this sound about right? I feel like I've seen Barry talk about brushing epoxy into surface-level cracks in the past, but I may have misunderstood.

Thanks.
