I’m in process of metalwork on 1972 GMC. My father ordered new in 1972 want to go back to original Omaha orange paint code 516, probably be single stage not sure yet. Wondering which primer color would be best grey, white or red oxide?

Color of your undercoats doesn't really matter. The only thing that will matter is what color is your sealer coat. Like Crash said white is pretty standard for most oranges. Light gray can be used but it takes more coats for the same effect as you would get with white. If you wanted your orange to be a shade or two darker then light grey would work.

Standox value shade chart.

Problem with Valueshade is it doesn't translate well to other systems, but if you have their products, it works well enough.

The point of using the correct color undercoat is to minimize the number of coats it takes to produce the illusion of 100% full coverage, NOT to influence the final appearance of the job.

Well I appreciate all the feedback on this. My son and I have never attempted paint at any level but we are not afraid of the result we can come out with, truck was in dire need of attention hadn’t been painted since 1984 single stage enamel sat outside in weather everyday since then. We just want the best bang for our buck, and want to learn all we can as we go. Thanks

in my opinion, orange topcoat does not cover black well at all. To cover black with orange is a waste of paint!

Only mention of black in this thread was to have some on hand to mix with white to make a shade of light grey if one desired. Generally white is a good choice for most shades of orange. And welcome BTW.
