Educate me on colors that use tinted clear coats...

I'm trying to decide on the color for my 67 Mustang and I'm liking the color called Red Candy on the new Mustangs. The color is listed as a tinted clear. I've read in another post that there are conversion formulas to turn tricoat colors into two stage (base/clear). So my question is, if the same color can be achieved without the tinted clearcoat what benefit does the tricoat method provide? Greater depth?

Thanks...Dave

Don't believe there is much of a gain here. I think the factory does that to cut down on costs. I believe some companies use the same method in repairs...but there isn't a single color like that in Sikkens (tinted clear). Its either a regular 2 stage bc/cc or a regular 3 stage.

I haven't done that color, but have repaired 3-stage paints from the factory that are listed in sikkens in just a 2-stage bc/cc. Can't tell the difference. In some other paint companies like dupont and ppg that same color is listed as a tri-stage.

It's possible some makers would create a tri-stage to enable better coverage, where the ground coat has decent coverage but doesn't quite have the "pop" that gets provided with the tinted intercoat type midcoat.
