Dynabrade DA sander ?

My old Ingersol DA sander is about ready to die and I want to move up in quality.
I know I want a PSA pad, non vac but I see Dynabrade makes several different models. I see a 3/8” orbit and 3/16”. Don’t know what my Ingersol is but guessing 3/16”
Is 3/8” too course for paint prep work. Probably will be used with 80 and 220 grit more often than not, course some 400.

Any suggestions would be appreciated

3/16 is generally the “industry standard.” It’s all I’ve ever used for everything. I have a new dynabrade 3/32 that’s been in the box for years…I’ve never used it.

I use my 3/8" for all but fine pre-buff sanding on clear. The 3/8" cuts without clogging better, but the 3/16" is all I use with 1000 grit or finer.

I use two Dynabrade 6 inch hook and loop 3/16 on everything from sanding filler to cutting before buffing, I had a few cheaper sanders before these and can say Dynabrade made a big difference for me.

i have around 10 sanders here, dynabrade, 3m, kovax and a few off brand ones. all are 3/16. the only thing i have with a 3/8 orbit is a 8" mud hog. 3/16 will do anything. 3/8 is more aggressive. 3/32 is about useless.

Well, I appreciate the comments on Dynabrade DA’s. I was leaning toward 3/16” orbit. I have a 6” da with 3/32” orbit, but seems like it takes forever .

Thanks, again for your input…….

I have the 5" 59024 Dynabrade with a 3/16" orbit and the vac attachment. I bought it used and got about 8 rolls of new Norton PSA papers of all grits thrown in. The value of the paper is more than the sander. Works really well and is a good USA made product meant to use not just be sold in a box store.

I did not think that I was going to use vac attachment and never liked any of that kind of thing in the past with the extra bulk and weight --but I really like that one now with this attachment and not having so much dust.

I’m biased towards Dynabrade ever since owning my first Dynafile II so take this for what’s worth. Well, that and the fact that their factory is just a few miles from me.

I have a pair of 59020’s (3/16) that are my go-to sanders. They’ve been flawless for me. Probably have 8-10 other Dynabrade tools here and have never had a single issue with any one of them.

I'd like to map out the regions or industries where 5" DA is a thing. So far I have not seen it on the West Coast or in the Pacific NW.

I don’t think it’s preferred in this industry at all. Maybe in woodworking it would be more popular?

That said, I run both and don’t really mind any difference. I often get deals on bulk lots of 3M abrasives and most of those are 5” so I can’t afford not to have one or two. My second 59020 has a 6” backing pad (I did the drop-in assembly with the swap instead of pressing the bearing on the shaft/balancer).

The one thing I do notice is that there is a much greater offering of 5” (auto body related) discs now, opposed to a dozen or so years ago when I first got one.
