Duplicating under hood paint on a 88 Iroc

I am in the process of rebuilding the original 1988 Morrison Cook SCCA Escort Endurance Series Iroc that won the championship in 88 and trying to get it back to as it looked when raced.

From the factory these cars had base only under the hood and bottom side of the car and never got any clear over those areas. I have stripped everything to bare metal and Friday sprayed it in gray SPI epoxy. I am planning on spraying the white [base GM code 40] and a friend suggested adding hardener to the base since it wont be getting clear coated.

I came across an older thread on here talking about adding 1 ounce of the clear hardener [ iirc] to base paint for adhesion purposes but would this also work in my case to give it a little durability? If not is there a better way to duplicate this look?

Factory underhood base is not chemically durable. Will wipe off with most solvents, strong degreasers. even waterborne cleaners (like 700). Urethane matte clear would look similar, and much more durable.

Could also experiment with a single-stage approximation of the exterior color with various amounts of flattener, this would be durable and solvent resistant, but obviously take quite a bit of work between the jobber and the sprayouts required to achieve an acceptable result, and then what do you compare it to, someone's memory of how it should look?
