Door bumper strips

Not sure which forum category to fit this one under. I removed, repaired, and repainted the narrow bumper strips that go on the side of the doors of a 97 Honda Accord (the ones everyone bang when they open up their car doors in a parking lot). I noticed that the old strips had not only the plastic fasteners but also a small thin strip of soft adhesive material that's used to fix the bumper strips to the doors (a similar material holds the metal model plates that are on the trunk lid). Any ideas if the adhesive needs to be there or will the plastic fasteners keep them in place? If it needs to be there, what can I use?
Thanks,
John

body side mouldings, 3M tape is one of the best, cleaning the mouldings right is very important. SPI waterborne wax and grease remover is a good final clean before the tape is applied but some shop's also use a swab on adhesion promoter on bare plastic.

AAE and Bob, Thanks for the tip on the 3M tape. My son and I cleaned up the trim, applied the tape, and pressed them onto the doors. The car actually looks finished now.
