Core support

I have the core support out of my truck and have planned on painting it with black epoxy. But I was curious what to do with the top, the factory stickers are fine and I was thinking about masking them off and then shooting it. Would clearing over them help any?

Also, and I know this is kinda sacrilege, but for such a small area would a rattle can clear work? I imagine the answer is no and my best bet would be to either use a good clear or no clear right?

I would but new stickers. Clearing over them is cheesey and masking them looks cheep. Epoxy the whole support and paint everything, you will feel better doing it right the first time.

If I was 100% sure I could get the OEM decals it would be a non-issue. LMC only shows 3 of the 4. But I get what you're saying.

I would call your auto dealer and give them the part number of the sticker located on the sticker and see if they have or can get them we do it all the time. Depending on the year they are available if they don't still offer them (because it is too old) then they can be made from a company I have delt with who is factory authorized to make them.

You can get any sticker from the dealer except the vin sticker from the dealer. If you need a vin sticker the company I deal with is authorized to make them.

Here is the company I have delt with. They are factory authorized to make all and any label you would need.

Factory Authorization doesn't mean squat in Virginia. What matters are the state and Federal laws regarding VIN codes. In Virginia you could get arrested and the car impounded for replacing the VIN Decal.(ask me how I know) It happened to me on a rebuider I was doing for someone.I simply removed the VIN decal from a used door at the customers request. Completely innocent mistake but the DMV/Stae Police didn't think so. Any tampering with a VIN decal is highly illegal. In fact it is a Federal crime to tamper with a VIN. And even though you are simply replacing a decal that is still considered tampering. Especially if you did that with a rebuilder. Check your states laws before replacing a VIN decal.

I can say that with the ins. Co's when we have replaced a door or quarter where the sticker is located we would cut out the part with the information sticker that has the vin number also and place it in the glove box for the customer but the ins. Co. would pay for the replacement of that sticker, the vin plate is a total "no go" nobody can touch that or remake that. In the case of Fords the paint and interior color codes are on that sticker. My 2000 Dodge I just did never had that sticker in the door jam it was replaced by Elk auto who made it a dump truck with one of theirs and it was bought new from a dealer so the information provided from Dodge on that sticker is not there. Would that be considered illegal? I highly doubt that and if so someone would end up getting a serious pop not on their head trying to seize it.

Ford is one Co that can't tell you much about colors by the vin so if you loose that decal your on your own, GM can give you detailed info by the vin number.

I spoke with ECS about getting one made for my truck and he said he would send me a form to take to the dealer and they fill in the information about my truck I then have to send that back to them and they make an exact replacement.

I was arrested in 2006 for tampering with a VIN by the DMV Inspector (who also are State Police) because I removed the Vin Decal in the Drivers door on a 2006 F250 SD that I rebuilt (salvage title) for a Customer. It was a legitimate used door that the customer purchased. He asked me to remove it. When the DMV came to inspect it so that the Salvage title could be converted back to a regular/branded title, the Inspector asked me where was the used door's VIN decal. I told him what I did and he proceeded to arrest me for VIN tampering. He told me that it was illegal to remove or replace any VIN decal (especially the one in the door) not only in the State of VA but also Federal. Luckily I was not charged after we provided proof of the purchase of the door among other things. It did cost over $700 to get the vehicle out of impound though. I only do rebuilders for one company now because of the hassle that the VA DMV puts you through.

Don't know what to say with your situation that's for sure. I didn't know you could get an R-title put back to a regular title my understanding has been once it was an R-title it stayed that way and there was nothing you could do about it.

From a Salvage title to a Rebuilt/Branded title. DMV inspects it when you are done and then approves it to be converted back to the Rebuilt title. Years ago Virginia would give you a title with no indication whatsoever that there was any salvage history. Now you get a rebuilt title. Pretty common in most states.

I get what your saying now, I never heard it called a branded title. The process is the same in PA to get it approved road worthy. I was thinking VA would wash the title like you said they did years ago.

Wow, I think back when I was working for a Chrysler dealer, how many stickers were removed from doors and center posts from customer cars...... All the staff would be in jail for life! I would never tape a sticker in a door that replaces the original door, or any other sticker.

Actually, if you are doing rattle can clear over the stickers, they have matte clears, check in the vht wheel paint section. I honestly would clear the stickers first, that way you do not need to worry about the tape pulling up any of that old print.Wait a couple days then mask over them so you dont end up having to replace them again anyway. Use a light tack tape, or even cut masking paper just a little smaller than the sticker so you have a little room for the sticky side of the tape. After that you can build up enough layers of tape where you feel you are safe to sand around them. Use a block to knock down the paint around the tape

Its your truck man, make it your own and do it your way. All this VIN sticker stuff does not apply to your question.
