clearcoating over autographs

i'm currently working on a project that includes having 5 bike tanks autographed, then they will be returned to me to reclear. any good recommendations on what type of marker to use for the autograph that wont bleed during the reclear? i'm guessing a god old sharpie may work best, but thought i would ask if anyone has done this & has any tips. i think the tanks are going out west for the autographs, then back here to tn. i've already painted the tanks, sprayed 2 coats of universal, then wetsanded with 600 in prep for the signatures. will add two more coats of universal afterwards to finish them up.

test panel! ive always wondered about clearing over sharpie artwork as well as some of those paint pen ink pens...

Agreed-test panel would be your best bet for sure. I cleared over a Harley tank signed with every signature of the Superbowl 97' Green Bay Packers on it. Very stressful!!! The tank had to be scuffed without hurting the autographs, I used one of those scratching pens for scuffing tight areas and carefully scuffed in and out and around the signatures. Had the ink ran when cleared I don't know what I would have done.

I have cleared over sharpie many times on wood. Do a test, like already mentioned. I always wait atleast a day before clearing so the sharpie is good a dry.

Do you charge extra for the "stress" factor on a job like that?

I have cleared over a sharpie many, many times. Never with an issue. Just let it dry.

I am a fan of POSCA brand paint pens. They are made in Japan and are just awesome. Much better than a sharpie and have some level of light fastness but even with that I have a test piece sitting in the sun with Sharpie black for the last 4 years in the AZ sun with no fading (SPI clear) You won't need good luck, its easy.
