I am interested in making a set of long splines for spreading filler. Had anyone made some of their own before? I have a few plastic companies close to me. I am just curious if you have made a set what did you make them out of? I'd like to make them as long at 30".

I have looked online and I just cant see spending 300 bucks on some strips of plastic...well not until I fail at making my own first!

Well I rediscovered a spreader for wallpaper a couple of months ago. Went from my house maintenance corner to my auto body corner of my mind. It’s about 24”” wide and will make a great spreader for flat panels....

i have a set from Melomotive i use they work great and make excellent sanding blocks takes a while to learn to use as a spreader

I recently saw this YT video where the presenter made a spline/spreader out of a carpenter's hand saw. He cut the teeth of and used the original "top" side of the saw as the spreader edge.

I would look at something like
this on EBay or Amazon…but I’m lazy.
The UHMW that I have used would clean up like the plastic spreaders, and would have a very low amount of friction.
This is more about the material than economy, so the drywall joint knives would be cheaper I suppose.

UHMW PE White Sheet 3/16" (.187") Thick x 24" x 48”

I know this much, wherever he's working has cool temperatures, probably 65 degrees or cooler. He sure has a lot of working time to use that spline.
