Basic Newbie Painting Question

I

I have a basic question. When shooting multiple coats of primer, base, or clear, should the first coat have full coverage, or do you build coverage with subsequent coats? I assume the term "wet coat" refers to a full coverage coat, correct?

Thanks!

A good wet coat of primer or clear will have full coverage in the first coat.. This is not the case with bases.. Some will seem to almost cover completely in the first coat, but they dont.. While some will be transparent for several coats until you reach full hiding..

You want your primer to be sprayed wet and even.. Same for your clear

Years ago when Acrylic enamel was the rave, people would use a tack coat first, to get everything sticky, then follow that with wet coats.. That is not how you should spray todays urethanes.. No tack coat is needed.. I know some old guys still practice this, but the adage " its hard to teach old dogs new tricks " applies here..

I spray my primer the same as I spray my clear. I want it to lay down nice and smooth, even though I plan to sand it. I have found that many primers will lay down with a somewhat shine if it is sprayed right. That way you can see what your work looks like. At work we use SW products. I can spray their P-38A gray primer to lay down as slick as the painters at work can lay out the clear.
