basf limco supreme

Limco supreme plus

Hey Guys,

Saw this thread here. I'm getting a '69 fiberglass Lotus Elan painted. I sanded off the original paint and primer down to glass and fixed the fiberglass spider cracks and crazing. The shop is recommend new gelcoat (over my glass repairs which are full of pinholes), block sand, R-M EP369 epoxy primer, followed by Limco Supreme Plus base and LC4100 clear. Now that Limco Supreme Plus has been out a couple years, I'm wondering if you experienced guys still have a good opinion about it.

The shop also sprays R-M Onyx HD waterborne line and R-M DC98 2.0 VOC Clear. I know you guys will recommend the SPI universal clear, but the shop only wants to spray the BASF lines.

Thanks in advance.

i have not had a chance to get my hands on and use the plus yet. i have used the supreme and its pretty crappy stuff. i would imagine the plus is better but i just cant say since i have not used it. limco is an acrylic enamel type base. if the plus is ae also then stay away from it. i just did a 10 year old grand cherokee in bright red supreme that the guy needed to keep the cost down on and it was fine for that. imo limco should not be used on any kind of restoration or higher end work. all the hours you put into something like that just to use an economy paint is beyond me. for a basf solvent they should use diamont or glasurit 55 line. i have nothing against limco. i use it here and there and it has its place but not for what you are doing. if they have to be low voc then the onyx is the way you need to go with it.

I have never understood the concept of applying gelcoat over repairs or as a primer surfacer. I've never known nor heard of anyone good using gelcoat in a repair system. I used to work with gelcoat, but it was strictly used as the first material to be sprayed into a properly prepped mold during the manufacture of new fiberglass parts. Based on that shop's recommendations, I would be a bit suspicious of their ability to produce a high quality result.

Well I only used it once. Nothing stood out for me to buy/use it again....

May be a fine budget line paint.....but I'll just keep using what works for me. Agree with jim, use the diamont clear.

I know nothing of these products but I would say that you have control over what goes on your project. If you don't feel comfortable about product choice then find a shop that meets your requirements.

Limco Supreme Plus vs RM Onyx and DC98

Thanks guys. You're awesome. I'll take your advice. RM EP369 Epoxy, Onyx Waterborne Basecoat, and DC98 2.0 VOC Clear. If they don't want to do that, I'll take it to another shop and see if they'll spray the SPI Low VOC epoxy, a waterborne base, and the SPI universal clear.

BTW, Happy New Year

Final process

Here's the final process

Gelcoat
Block sand
R-M EP369 Epoxy Primer
Fill pin holes / sand
R-M EP369 Epoxy Primer
R-M Onyx HD waterborne base
DC 98 low VOC clear

All hardware removed by owner. Shop to paint door jambs, underside of boot lid, and bumpers (in another color).

$4600

I seen a nice 67 vette have a bunch of bubbling problems when gelcoat was used like that!
