Hello all,
Need to spray a panel with SPI epoxy primer tomorrow, but I am out WAX / Grease remover
I was thinking to wipe the panel with Windex first, then methanol which I have plenty, and last step with naphtha.
What do you think?

Bare metal? Painted? Fiberglass? Plastic? Greasy or oily? Silicone contamination? Lots of variables, including how much you care for the panel you are spraying. In other words, I would not experiment on something I care about. Dawn and water is safe to use on most anything.

Naptha? That's kinda like mineral spirits. Not sure about methanol, as I haven't ever used it in raw form.
As said , regular base dawn & water is safe for most, as is isopropyl alcohol, which is key component of many wax, grease removers. Iso is your cleanest alcohol. Do at least 1/2 hr before spraying.

Sorry, I should have provided more info. Is a bare metal I am priming and is part of the floor pan and will be covered with carpet and etc. Don't want to wash it with Dawn and water to cause flash rust. Naptha is more like coleman fuel very good on cleaning grease. So I though since is a floor pan, naptha to remove the oil contaminations and Alcohol to remove water based contaminations. But if it will be a bad idean. then I will not do it.

do the naptha first then use denatured alcohol. denatured makes a good wipe down and final cleaner before paint. if you have iso alcohol like jl said then that is fine as well

Good to know Naptha is ok for initial solvent cleaner, only used it for old oil based wood stains & what not. Definitely not a final clean product.
Actually use a boatload of denatured alcohol at work for all sorts of cleaning & as a cleaner before acrylic paint. Thankfully the news people never named denatured alcohol as a covid cleaning supply, so it's still easily available. It's probably marginally stronger than iso, though not as refined. Most smell like potato based moonshine. Has been a form of daily hand cleaner from a spray bottle for years for me & co-workers, also great for tooling over many types of urethane caulks.

I have read in a few places that denatured alcohol leaves some kind of residue. is that true?

Denatured is very clean. You can clean glass with it and no residue. Its used almost exclusively in the marine industry as a prewipe before painting or adhering anything. Why, i have no idea. They dont like change i guess but i have used it since the late 90’s. Never an issue. Keep in mind though that anything we talk about in this thread isnt specifically made for reducing, cleaning or any other function in the automotive paint process so there is always a chance that a mfg of the solvents dont make them to the quality standards that we need so there is a chance there can be other things in them or maybe not refined enough. You never know. I have used kleenstrip odorless mineral spirits from home depot for 20 years to wipe down delicate airbrushing before clear and never an issue. Doesnt mean though that another brand or even that brand will give me the same results in the future.
