2K Regular build prime

Hi, I am new to this site; "it is great" I have been doing restoration work for about 30 years and have used many different products over the years. For many of those years I used GLASURIT , the complete paint system until it just cost to much. It looks like SPI is a pretty good product with a very fair price; I am thinking about trying the 2K regular primer on my own personal 67 C 10. Can anyone give me any insight....sprays, sands, shrinkage, longevity; things like that? Thank you very much for your time.

Sprays and sands great. If prepped correctly longevity isn't an issue. Shrinkage depends on application. If you hammer it on, it's going to shrink. Don't try to bury 80 grit marks.
There is also the Turbo primer that is completely dry in 3 hours, depending on conditions.

I almost exclusively use SPI 2K Regular primer. I also used BASF for years and still use it sometimes for color. I used Diamont on late model and Glasurit has more formulas for the older stuff. Anyway, you will not be disappointed with 2K regular. Like what was said above, NO PRIMER is made to be body filler. If you use it as a primer should be, it's as good or better than any of the others. Adhesion is great, it sands great, better than BASF I think. I think it shrinks less than BASF. When you are ready to clear, I use both SPI Euro 2020 and SPI Universal according to what I'm trying to accomplish. Both great products.

Thanks for the info; I'am glad to hear you have used BASF that is a good and sound comparison to SPI. I feel confident in using the product. I finish my body filler off in 120-180 then Slick Sand and block multiple times always blocking down as close as i can get to the filler. One of my secrets is using a #2 pencil and scribbling on the primer in between every block and prime. That is my guide to help keep the primer from to much build. But it may not be a secret,LOL been doing it for 20 plus years. Then i switch to the 2K so i can do my finial sanding wet. I will do my finial sand with 220/400 then 600; I do not seal before paint; i like to get my primer color as close to the paint color as possible. So when i seen the black 2K I got excited. Years ago we used to use the Glasurit 285 tintable but that was huge $$$. Anyway thanks for your time!

after reading your process i am going to throw this one out there.... since you poly prime and you really dont need a ton of build, try out the 2k sealer instead of regular build. the 2k sealer is a 2k primer but the fillers and pigments are finer in it so it sprays extremely slick and smooth. sands very fine and powdery. doesnt load paper at all. the build on the sealer can be anywhere from less than the regular build primer to as much as a poly primer depending on how much you reduce it. its avail in black and white so you can mix any shade between. i basically quit using any other primers in the shop and just stock and use the sealer.

That is interesting and definitely something to think about; and it will wet sand nicly?

absolutely. it sands great. i have been using it for both my primer surfacer and as a sealer since it was released. that has to be 10+ years ago. mix at 4:1:2 as a sealer in a 1.3 or 1.4 base bun or 4:1:1 as a regular build primer wilth a 1.8-2.0 primer gun or 4:1 as a super build primer. i spray it at 4:1 out of my 2.5 sata poly primer gun lol. it flows out nicely though.

Jim, you use the 2K sealer as your blocking primer? and as the sealer coat before base (instead of reduced epoxy?)

Jim I like the sound of that. I have reduced the regular 2K and used as a sealer in a pinch with help from tech support. Does Barry support the use of the 2K sealer like this? Minus VOC concerns.....

yes i use it as my blocking primer. i will also use it as a sealer but i use epoxy as well. the sealer is a regular 2k primer. there isnt much different with it except it spray slick with a smooth surface and no grittiness because the fillers in it seem to be finer and possibly slightly more resin rich. the current sealer is the 2nd gen product. back in the old days it was the type of sealer that would spray more like clearcoat and would dry glossy. i personally hate those types because you cant denib them because they stay gooey for so long. i complained enough to barry about it and he scrapped it and reformulated it to the current stuff which is very close to hok Koseal which is their 2k primer...or was. i havent followed hok products in a long time.

2k sealer is all i use 4:1 as regular built primer and 4:1:1 as a sealer acts just like the regular built primer but the materials are finer.

Jim, just curious, do you buy just black and white and blend them? Or do you just use gray? Do you see any sanding difference between the black and white if you use as a primer? Thanks and I'm going to order some today or tomorrow instead of regular 2K...

yes i keep a gal of black and white on my mixing rack then just intermix for any grey i want. no difference in sanding as far as color goes.
