2 Questiosn about clearcoat over acrylic urethane

1) Will clearcoating acrylic urethane paint give it a higher and deeper gloss and should I clearcoat over AU?

2) Is it necessary to wet sand orange peel in acrylic urethane before covering it in clearcoat?

Is this a metalic or solid color? What brand? Urethane singlestage color + urethane clear is the most durable system available. The best chip resistance plus the UV resistance of the clear. If it's done over a quality epoxy primer it's even more durable.

Thanks for the reply Bob. The AUis PPG Omni MTK in solid green not metalic and I sprayed it over SPI epoxy.
Which SPI clear would you recommend?

Thanks

Check with Barry, I bet any would work well but I haven't used it over MTK. MTK does share the same hardeners with some of the Omni Clears so that's also an option. If it's already sprayed you may need to rescuff and shoot a fresh coat before applying your clear.

Thanks Bob,

The car is a model a Ford and I am doing it in stages and learning as I go. The body and doors are the items I am working on at the present time
I appreciate the information and will check with Barry.

Sometimes SS colors will change a bit if wetsanded and cleared. I will do a test panel, one with color and clear with no sanding, and one with color that has been sanded and cleared. If they appear different, a different technique must be used. I know on one I did, I used the matching clear to the single stage wet-on-wet, then sanded that clear and recoated it with SPI clear.

Oh, the one I am talking about is long gone. It was a '55 Chevy. oddly enough, I can't find the finished photos of it, all I can find are in-progress shots.

But I can tell you that the technique I used gives an extremely good result. The only possible increase in quality would be to use the wet-on-wet technique following the Omni AU directly with SPI clear instead of an Omni clear. I don't know if this is possible. If SPI reducer is used all the way through the job (in the Omni) it might be OK. Talking with Barry and doing a test panel would show if this would be OK.

The quality level you desire and your paint budget will dictate the procedure used.

MTK is spec'd to use a reducer but from what I remember it's so thin it sprays just fine without any reducer.
