1974 Valiant

I got a '74 valiant with 52k miles, v8 318. Except for some rust issues on the rockers and lower 1/4's it is really nice and runs great. I want to know what is a good way to get the paint and chrome,esp. bumpers, looking nice. I started buffing with super duty and can see a big difference. Any help would be great. I only paid $600 for it.

I have used phosphoric acid on chrome plated steel and it words great, it desolves the rust so you have to keep it wet long enough to get the job done. But don't try it on pot metal or any kind of aluminum.

We generally like to clean chrome with 00 steel wool, then apply car wax. Steel wool won't scratch true chrome. You may wish to try this more gentle method before moving to acid. Either way, car wax will help seal the pores in the chrome after cleaning, which will slow the rusting of the mild steel beneath.
