'02 Subaru WRX repair and overall paint

Arrowhead

Oldtimer
My son got this last summer and it had some damage to the drivers fender and hood so he got a good deal. Well he drove it that way for a couple of months (luckily) and then hit a deer. So now it had even more damage but it was all covered under insurance. He wanted to make some other small modifications while we had to fix it anyway (shave the trunk lid, paint some black plastic parts body color, fix some dents on the doors, etc.) so I agreed to just repaint the whole car. Came out pretty good and he's real happy with it. Good practice shooting silver too.

Thanks, I also painted another set of wheels for it, but he's waiting till good weather to put them on.

All is not rosey though, I made a few big mistakes and had to paint and clear it twice. When I layed the color down, it came out great. I pushed the envelope a bit and shot the clear too soon. I don't think that would have been a problem, but had a lot of runs in the clear for some reason (well I know the reason - I screwed up). Well everywhere the clear ran, it pulled the color with it and distorted the metallic so even though I could sand out the runs, it left a ghost image of the run in the paint. It was severe enough that it was worth it to resand and repaint most all of the car - there were a couple panels that were ok.

So, now I know better and the second time around it came out real good.

I used PPG DBU paint and SPI clear.

He got new front and rear bumper covers that I had to paint and I also did a hood and new bumper cover for my friends daughter's car (another deer hit - we have a lot of deer here). I alos did a couple of hoods for some friends of mine - both had the factory clear failed. Those bumper covers are a pain in the ass and the metal on the newer cars is so thin they dent just breathing on them.

NEW rule - no body work paint for anything newer than 1972!!!!!
