I have a few jobs lined up and was wanting any advice on ppg shop line plus base coat, I am spraying an all over honda odessy solid white. I have a devilbiss tekna with 1.3, 1.4 and 1.5 tips, HV 30 and te 20 air caps, Which tip and cap would you suggest? I will be using spi universal clear also and will be spraying that with the same gun for now, Any pointers on that set up?

TE20 cap with 1.3 for basecoat, use SPI reducer works really good. Been a while I don’t spray clear with those air caps so I can’t offer any help.

If your base calls for reducer, then, the SPI series is just right. Remember, go a step slower in product than you think you should.
For clear, use the te20 and 1.4 and a step slower activator.

They gave me Grow automotive medium reducer at the paint store, I am going to place another order for euro and uv so I'll order my reducer then. I appreciate all the help.

Please give an update on your opinion of the shopline plus!

Shopline plus is simply Omni Plus repackaged. Economy type basecoat that is suitable for lower end collision repair, used car work, that sort of thing. Long term it will fade underneath even the best clear. The mettallic used in it is subpar. Muddier and not as bright as a quality base or OEM if you are trying to blend. Coverage is mediocre at best. When I used it at work it always took at least four coats for coverage, sometimes five. No real savings as you are using more material. Spend a little more for a premium base.

Painted something last year with shopline single stage. It was an odd color and formula wasn't available in dbu or from the other majors. It was thin and took more coats to cover. But made it work out OK.

Sorry for the hijack J.C, whats your opinion on prospray Chris?

I don't have enough experience to give a review on the plus, What are you guys thoughts on the Chromax?

Do you mean ChromaBase or Cromax Mosaic solvent? There’s also Cromax Pro and Cromax EZ waterborne.

Mosaic I’ve used very little of it, I dislike basecoat that force you to use dedicated ‘activated’ reducers.

If I can’t use SPI reducer in it I don’t touch it lol

We switched over to Cromax Mosaic and at first I was skeptical but I have to admit for what we do (insurance collision repair) it works nicely. Color match is excellent and the base itself looks good and has a quality "feel" to it. Would not be my first choice as Jorge says it makes you use a dedicated reducer that is very expensive but it covers well and color match has been spot on. Blending is very easy with it as well. Only drawback apart from the dedicated reducer is that color formulas are somewhat limited. Late model coverage is good but not 100%.

run away as fast as you can from prosray .
Shine, I thought Prospray was recommended by folks on this forum. Did something change, or have you never been a fan ? I think I read somewhere they were bought out by another company, and the quality has suffered.

I'd like to know also.

i cant keep up with all these paint companies buying one another lol. sw did buy valspar. a couple weeks back i had an order of conversion varnish delivered. i always use the valspar stuff. this time it came in an axalta can. i was scratching my head thinking i know sw bought it. well they did but sw only owned the wood finish line for 1 day then they sold off that part of it the axalta.

I didn't really have any issues with Prospray. I stopped using it because my jobber dropped it when they started charging a monthly fee for each shop to use the color formula software. And it was pretty high for something most provide at no cost to spray their paint. But it's been a few years, maybe it's different now. I was told Prospray was a copy of the original ICI Autocolor that somehow spoon off when ICI was acquired by PPG years ago.
