Why no SS quarts?

Any good reason that single stage is not available in quarts? Even when shooting a car with BC/CC I would like to be able to shoot areas like the trunk, and underbody with single stage for ease of painting, but I sure don't want to buy a whole gallon as expensive as red is.

Any good reason why you are not shooting the whole car in single stage? ;>). Try it, you’ll like it... I use SPI single stage whenever I can, especially the black.

Because only a few colors are good volume sellers in ss.
So the cost for the company is not worth the coat for two extra labels
And extra 1/2 pint cans for activator

I usually do on solid colors, but this time I decided to go with B/C to get that extra pop that comes with clear. This is the first time I have ever used SPI products. I have used nothing but PPG DCC for single stage for the last 16 years, but they have just priced their stuff so high that I decided to try other products. I have 5 cars with single stage red DCC paint on them, and am just trying something different this time. I have already purchased materials for this job, so backing up to SS is not an option.

Barry, so the volume in SPI red is higher in BC/CC than in single stage? I figured that more people were shooting SPI red in SS.

Wow! I sure would have thought that SS was far an away the highest volume in SPI Red. It surprises the heck out of me that BC/CC has that much higher volume!

If that many people are using BC/CC, there must be a good reason. I went that way because I thought that the clear would give a deeper look than SS.

I tried clear on PPG over concept (DCC) years ago, and the difference was barely noticeable, so I stuck with SS. This will be interesting to see how the SPI red looks in BC/CC.

far too many people buy into the bc/cc is easier and glosses better . that old wives tale is the worst thing in painting . i prefer ss/cc over any basecoat . base is the weak link as far as i'm concerned . the 57 vette was concept with spi clear coat .

John,
This is why fewer companies are making or putting much effort into ss.
Getting harder to find, black, and some whites would be the exception to the rules, as far usage in ss.

You have known me for enough years to know that I have always been a concept fan, as long as it was a solid color. This switch to SPI is going to be learning experience. I am sure that I will try some stuff that I like, and some stuff that I don't. If I paint in single stage, I will need to make sure how much I need for a job. If I paint a car that is just over a gallon, the economics of buying another full gallon for the quart or so that is needed, will take away a lot of the price advantage over Concept DCC.

Hey Barry, one other question. I use tintable bedliner to spray on the underbody on a lot of cars. Can I use the base to tint the bedliner, and will it come out glossy? I have always used single stage, and it comes out pretty glossy. If not, I may have to get a close color match in some alternative single stage, just to tint my bedliner with.

Hi John. I used SPI medium red base to tint my tintable raptor liner. It did not come out glossy. I wouldn't call if flat, but it wasn't glossy. However, for me, since I'm treating it as undercoating, it was the perfect look for me. I tinted it to 15%, by weight, which is what the instructions recommended.

It may look glossy in this pic, but it's not like clear coat is glossy.
