Which clear to use??

SPI Universal Clear. It is a very high quality clear. One of the best clears out there. And it's affordable as well. It's a true Polyurethane that stays easy to buff for a very long time and has been used on many high end vehicles. Pebble Beach etc.

2015 Pebble Beach Best of Show was an SPI car, including Universal Clear.

Universal's solids content is 50% making it a high solid. The 7900 is around 45%,making it a medium solid. When the 7900 is RTS, I saw it's around 38%.

What would the Universal's solids content be RTS?

Doing some quick math with round numbers, a gallon of Universal and four quarts of activator gives me 2 gallons of RTS clear for about $340. That's pretty good provided I get about the same film build as the 7900S. At some of the best prices I got on 7900S, it's about $620 for 2.5 gallons RTS.
Universal is definitely not watered down. Barry could give you exact percentages but it is one of the higher solids clears available. Film build(millage) per coat is pretty high. Two gallons RTS will go a long way. I can promise you, that you will not be disappointed. It buffs very easy and stays that way. Looks very good after buffing and as a bonus has the most (I think) UV protection of any clear on the market. It also is relatively chip resistant because it stays relatively flexible. It doesn't get rock hard like so many Urethane clears do.

Not sure if I should hijack this thread or make another one.
Whats the difference between all the clears? This is all the info I got from the website but it would be nice to know more.

Universal: easy to spray, hard to run and buffs easy
Euro: depth, gloss and friendliness for heavy flakes, mobile repair, wood
Production: budget-friendly, high-medium solids two-coat clear
Speed: ease of buffing, gloss and lack of die-back and solvent pop

I’d like to put a semi-satin clear on my dash, I’ll also need high build primer. How would I do that with one of these? Another post said (part # 2200 I think) was a matte clear. Is there a pdf of the catalog?

  • My opinions. Universal: best for show car. Euro: best for daily driver. Production: high quality, inexpensive, versatile enough for small jobs to completes. Speed: best for small jobs. Universal buffs the easiest, but scratches the easiest. Euro buffs easy also, but will get harder after time. Speed is fool proof on small areas, and buffs great the first 24-48 hrs., then gets harder after that. None of the clears buff hard in comparison to some I've used in the past. All the clears have great gloss, clarity, flexibility, chemical resistance and ease of use. Euro is probably the most versatile because of the ability to adjust hardener and reducer speeds, and mix ratios. Speed clear gives you the advantage of being able to handle, assemble, and buff parts much quicker than than the others, in those situations where that is necessary. I would message JimC about flattening the clear, or call Barry for suggestions.
