Which brand of candy?

I'm going to be air brushing a helmet for a customer. I'm wondering which candy Yall like. One of my friends said that he hates house of color and says he personally thinks that they don't have that real candy look to them. He uses RM candys. I was get my candys then add them to clear and reduce them to use in my air brush. Any tips and opinions on paint is welcome

Just for an update I got quoted at $5.33 an oz for my red yellow and my orange candy concentrates. As well as my mixing clear in RM. Sounds pretty good to me what do you think?

I just bought some HOK candy apple base last week. Never tried it before but I have a 70's Kawasaki tank that was candy apple red. I was gonna do a spray out over white pearl (supposedly how Kawi did back in the 70') and a couple other colors to see how it works.

It was around 80 dollars for a quart. The only way they sell this color is by the quarts.

I can't give you any tips since I've never sprayed candy's before. Tanks been ready for weeks, I've been dragging my feet on it to possibly avoid a headache.

I like the coating stores candy. They have plastic screw top bottles with a measuring area. Then you use the kickass intercoat clear from SPI to mix it in

Sorry are you meaning NCS national coating supply candies? Also Have any of you on here used auto air candies on out side?

dont use anything auto air. hok has a few versions of kandies. your friend might be talking about the kbc line which has the pearls and metallics mixed in. they arent a true candy and hok's dont really look good at all. they are designed to make it easier to do a candy job. as for the actual candy dyes, it doesnt matter what company you get them from, they are all the same dyes. the paint companies just buy the dye, mix it into solvents or a binder then resell it to you at about a 10000% markup. basically it doesnt matter who you get they dye from. colors are all basically the same and all give the exact same effect. mix it into a clear basecoat binder for airbrushing. spi intercoat is a good one.

Which brand of candy do you prefer?

Interesting take Jim C.

I have little knowledge or experience in this area. For what it's worth, I have been using very inexpensive powder that you mix with a little thinner, then into the clear. Has worked well for learning how to use candy. Don't know if I would want to use this on a real project as I've heard the cheap candies (like what I'm using) fade fast from the sun and the better stuff will last for years under good clear.

Thoughts???

bob, candies arent powder. they are a liquid dye. what you have is a pearl. some companies selling those call them candy or whatever. no idea why. prob just a marketing thing.

65, as i said it doesnt matter. they are all the same. i can use hok kk like or basf carizzma, alsa, or any number of dyes. as long as they are just candy dye and not a mix of pearls, dye or whatever then its the same thing from one brand to another. i have a few colors of candy dye i got from valspar which are actual pure dye. they are about 1000 times as concentrated as basf, hok or any of the others but the dye is the same. i use those for the colors i have and usually carizzma for the others. occasionally hok.

I have heard good things about ALSA Corp, especially their black candy. Only used it from a spray can tho for small projects.

The powder stuff I've been using reminds me of Koolaid. It's got to be a dye, just in powder form. You can use a little for a very light tint or a lot for a deep tint. If you put the powder into reducer you can watch it dissolve into solution. The resulting color is super transparent, you can see though the cup just like water with food coloring. In my limited experience pearls don't do that.

This is what the powder stuff looks like this when sprayed over metal flake.

Huh, yeah i guess. Just never heard of it coming in powder form in my life. Who are you getting that from? The same black candy alsa has is in basf's carizzma line and if you are looking for it much cheaper its actually one of the std toners right on a wanda mixing rack.

one I used was www.paintwithpearl.com

First I used their midnight blue metalflake to mix with intercoat clear on the jeep we painted. We used their royal blue candy metallic to mix in the black basecoat to get our daylight and night time color shifting midnight blue on the camaro since that midnight blue metalflake was just to big to make the metallic.. Only problem was the second time we ordered after our clear issue, the hue was brighter and could not find the color again. It was good stuff, 8-10 bucks per 25 gram bag, mix it with thinner before introducing it into a base color, but buy more than you need to get the same color stuff on the metallics. The straight candys have usually been consistent, getting a little digital jewelry scale will help with consistency to quarts. We actually add their black candy to clear powder to produce this shaded clear this custom furniture guy likes on pewtered steel furniture he makes. We just switched to the coating store after the debackle with that color shift on the midnight blue.
