When to start sanding/buffing

I've looked through the archives, but didn't find much mention....When is the optimal time to sand and buff a freshly painted car in average temp conditions? I'm thinking too soon will get some shrinkage going forward, and too long it will be a bit harder. So when is the sweet spot, and should there maybe be a gap between sanding and buffing. Thanks so much....great forum!

I normally wait at least a week before cut&buff in temps 70 and above. You can use the fingernail press test and check to see if it leaves an indentation in an inconspicuous place. If it's cured enough then it will not leave a mark. As for the effort to sand with time, you don't need to worry about that if you are using Universal Clear (I can't comment on the other SPI clears). I've sanded panels down easily that sat for over a month curing. I work on my car as I get time so I will sand and sometimes that takes me a few days to finish before getting to polishing.
I've read that sanding and letting it sit for a day or more helps with curing.
How did you paint and what brand?

I find the Universal to fingernail weeks after spraying.

The universal clear is inherently softer then production clears where some can get rock hard in just 2 days.

MikeS is correct with his reply. I would sand let it breath out for a day or two proceed to the next grit do the same continue until you reach the desired grit then begin buffing, that's what I do for the special vehicles, other wise you could just sand until you reach the desired grit and buff with no delays for letting it to breath out the next day (24hrs).

I'm using the SPI single stage black. I sprayed it last Thursday, and it has hardened up nicely at this point. What I would like to do is sand it over the next couple weeks, and then leave the buffing til next Spring, as the whole car needs to be re-assembled, and any dust in the interim will end up scratching a fully buffed car. I will follow your advice about letting it breathe between grits...sounds like a good idea.

Thanks,

Chris

I'm going to take your advice crash. That was my preference, but wasn't sure if the paint would be too hard, and make it a lot more difficult. Datec, I've got 4 good coats on, but will definitely heed your advice. Thanks guys.

Will Do.....I got the body nice and straight so it should be very nice in the end!
