What would be a good base brand to use user SPI

I am going to be painting my 1965 mustang v8 c4 automatic factory air factory power steering car as well as my 1985 chevy k10 very soon and I have a few questions. I'm going to be using SPI clear and probably some epoxy primer for some touch up areas. I'm curious as to what would be a good base coat to use under the SPI universal clear? I do have a friend that works at fairly local paint store and he said he gets a 50% discount on stuff since his uncle owns the shop. He quoted me at $527.83 for gallon of base reducer as well as a gallon of the best clear and catalyst. this is in valspar brand automotive paint. This is a killer good deal as the base alone usually goes 580.97 by its self with out my friends discount. I don't nessicarilly want that clear that they suggested. I'm wanting to try the SPI universal clear as I've hurd good things about it. Would the valspar base be an okay base under the clear? If not is the SPI red base at all close to the 1965 Ford Mustang Candy Apple Red code "T" that I was planning on using? Also does the SPI universal clear have good UV protection? I've used RM clears and they seem okay as do their base coats. How does the clear and bases comapare? Also went of course doing correct excellent prep work mixing spraying of the clear how long is the clear supposed to last? Sorry as I'm a new to the SPI products and have so many basic questions.

Have Chad Sperry quote you on some Motobase. It mixes 1:1 with SPI reducer and I felt it covered and sprayed great. Used it on this truck:

You will not go wrong using SPI universal clear. In 2007 a friend asked me to help them with their 55 Chevy. It is black. It was painted bc/cc with universal clear. I see this car occasionally and it still looks as good today as it did in 07. They have had it in lots of shows also. People find it hard to believe that it was done in 07.

That's awesome glad to hear it still looks awesome! Do you have some suggestions on base? Have you or anyone you know used valspar base?

Barry do you or anyone else here by chance know how the SPI Red compares to stock ford candy Apple red? I'm looking for a dark blood red

I have been using PPG Deltron for base under the UV clear for a few years now and have not had any issues. As for my personal preferences/recommendation, PPG Deltron (DBC), Glasurit, or R-M would be my choices in that order. Just my personal preferences others may have other options.

I have used BASF Diamont, PPG and Chromabase with lots of success. I don't know anyone who has used valspar base. If you want it to last put quality paint on it.

used diamont with spi primers and clears for 13 years. 2 years ago i ditched the diamont and changed to wanda which i like better at 1/3 the cost. also used spi with hok, sikkens, ppg, dupont and many others. the spi will work over and under just about anything. most of my jobs are some type of true dye based candies which always fade easily. i have a job in my shop now that is 13 years old with universal over candy green. no fading. looks like i shot it yesterday. granted it doesnt sit in the sun day in day out but still that is something to be said for the universal clear's uv protection.

If you want it to look good and not have to redo it in a few years use quality materials. When I found SPI primers and clears several years ago I started using them and liked them and never looked back. Lots of good information about what you need to know here on this forum.

Thanks everyone for you input on what I should do. Sorry in advanced as I forgot to mention the paints I have available to me local. I will be using the colleges booth as I'm going to school for auto collision repair and refinishing. I'm taking the paint class and have awesome teacher Hondo john. He's been a custom car painter for over 30 years so if I have some questions which I doubt since I've sprayed before. But having the booth will limit my product waste and crap getting into the finish.

Ppg deltron its about 580 for the gallon of base. Ppg omni about 170.
Sherwin Williams if I remember right it was 280
RM 680 for low end 790 for good stuff
Valspar with 50% discout 289.00 if I didn't get the discount it 489.00.
De Beer 680
And I can get Speis about 480

If I can order a sample of the SPI dark red I might do that.

the rm isnt anywhere close to being worth it. def no omni. cant say i have used sherwin and the only valspar i have used is house of kolor but thats not the same thing. out of your list i would go with speis. thats a good base and that price isnt bad. you can also get with chad on here and he can mix you wanda or the other line he carries.

No worries with UV protection on the SPI clear, My Son did a complete with only one coat of UV back about 6-7 years ago and even at one coat it held up great. Is that Valspar a 2:1 mix ratio??

Thanks guys for all the replys I'll have to check into the other to lines as well you mentioned that chad sells. Also the valspar is a 1:1 ratio. I know on the paints that usually the lesser lines are the technology of ten or so years back. For instance when RM brought out a new line then repalced the old top lines colorants with the new and steped every thing down a notch. And I'm sure it's the same with other brands. Will I notice a bunch of difference in paint lines since its a solid deep red?

as a general rule you want to stay away from most economy systems like omni, nason, limco. you would notice a big difference between those and dbc, speis, etc. omni will usually be like water and cover horrible especially in a red. reds are usually tough to cover as it is. there are a couple lower lines i know of that are good and have been mentioned here. wanda, chads motobase stuff has good feeedback and i have actually heard alot of good things about ppg shopline but i have never tried it. i know wanda was a very close copy to original sikkens autobase which was their top line. they brought that down to the bottom, relabeled it, made it a little faster and gave it an unsupported status to make it cheap. color matches and coverage are just about as good as a premium. you save the money because there is no tech support or warranty on it from akzo. just what the jobber supplies....not that you would get anything anyway lol.

Awesome thanks guys. This forum is awesome im gonna get on Internet and look and see if I can find and local jobbers that sell the other brands mentioned. With my luck I'd order some and Id then be short some and Id hate to have to order it for that reason.
