What went wrong?

Hmm, it's odd that you wouldn't have noticed that spot then during the final sanding. That means it was probably introduced while spraying. I find it amazing how fresh paint attracts dust, hair, bugs and contaminants from a freshly cleaned booth.
Yes its amazing to me. All is well and looks good. Pull the trigger and I start shedding hair.

Base coat systems are designed specifically with these kinds of repairs in mind. Just use a slow enough reducer so that your base overspray is not dry. This job should be a piece of cake because it's a solid color. Metallics are where guys struggle. As for the repair area prep, I would use 600. Opinions may vary on this.
Thanks. Sounds good. Going to start on it tomorrow

Had the day off today. Scuffed the whole top of trunk with 600 dry. I was spraying epoxy today so I spot epoxy the burn thru. It was reduced a little. It took 3 coats to conceal that burn thru. Waiting 15 minutes. Had it outside in direct sun. The metal temp was 105. Took in the shop and let it cool then spot based it. I didn't like the way it looked and being that the epoxy was black I didn't know exactly were the epoxy and base were...so I just re based that half of the trunk. Let it flash off for an hour then hit the whole trunk with 3 coats of clear. Have quit a few dust nibs to sand out but it appears fixed. I was worried about solvent pop because we sprayed epoxy base and clear all within about 3 hours of each other but its been 2 hours since done and appears stable. Only thing I didn't follow was waiting 24hrs to base. Hopefully we are out of the woods and just need to wetsand and buff. Will update in a few days

Typically when I primer a repair, I wait until the next day and sand it before painting. Going straight to base/clear after 3 coats of epoxy is a bold move.

Oh I completely agree. I told my buddy that I dont feel good about this whole thing. Felt rushed. Infact we even made a bet that we would be repainting this again.
