What wax does everyone suggest.....you too Barry

I had a conversation with Barry a month ago..he was telling me about different waxes and how they affect the longevity of a paint job! I am trying to type up a care sheet to give my customers when I finish there car, any suggestions for what wax to use, why, and how long in between waxing??

The Chemical Guys stuff has silicone in it, so the "pure" in their description is frankly bs. I guess I could get flamed for saying so because a lot of their stuff is apparently really good, but read the ingredients for yourself. The true, pure carnauba doesn't mess with paint processes or curing, but almost all "carnauba" products have other things in them, like silicone or polymer sealants. There is a wax called P21S that supposedly has only carnauba in it, but I've not used it.

Crash,
There are different types of silicone's and not all are problems, have no clue witch one they use but it would be suicide if they used one that would cause problems in a shop.
We have 3 or 4 silicone's in the plant and they are the type you could paint right over these are derivatives of silicone's.

I'am not a wax type person but when we do take a car out for a days cruise, I spray the car with a detail spray (glaze) just so the bugs wash off easily when I get to it the next weekend.
Only wax i would ever use on new or old would be a Carnuba wax, so paint can breath, very important for long life.

Case in point! Any of you ever seen a young guy buy a new car and wax it twice a month and two years later he stops waxing and paint job looks like its 15 years old?

exactly why i use it. makes cleaning up easy . bugs come off quick.
if you want 100% carnuba wax rub your car with a palm leave. there is no such thing. it is a dry substance like oatmeal . so how would you make a paste wax from it ?
8 oz paste is 20.00 16 oz cream is 14.00 .

that P21S looks pretty cool, found it on amazon around 40. They have an SP100 on the bottom where people who viewed this viewed these that has beeswax added to carnuba for 15.

I've been using Collinite no.476s wax for over 20 years. It's harder to use than most products today. Rubs off on the hard side but it doesn't leave white crap all over if you touch the rubber.
I just searched their site and they have a premium wax with more Carnuba that I wasn't aware of. It was great back in the laquer days as it polished pretty good. Still have two cars in laquer and this wax does a great job.

I sometimes use Mequiars Tech wax and their gold class. Used to get it in goody bags at the Concourse shows. Shined really good and was super easy to put on. I still use the tech wax if I'm to lazy to Collinite it. On a side note I sat with Barry Meguiar at a car event dinner and I have to say he is a heck of a nice guy. Real car guy.

Presta has a wax called Fast Wax. They claim on their products page that it can be applied over 24h old clear coat. Used it a couple of times, easy to work, but tech sheet says it has to be used out of prep and paint areas, so I don't use it in the shop.

i have been using the fast wax for atleast 10 years. its great to clean the panel off after polishing. it cleans up buffing smears and compound splatters great and leave it streak free. i really love that stuff! it doesnt last long though. its great to give a quick wipe down before delivery. you can do a whole car in about 10 min. its a very light wax. i have never in 10 years had an issue with it causing contamination problems. i use it on everything.

I like the Zaino stuff. I love the borderless blonde towels they sell. Best rag for a black car that I have found.

I assume you use it right in your shop then?

Fast wax is a great product and lots of shops use it, it nothing more than a glaze and totally safe, so for the week or two it lasts, it allowed the paint to cure out.

I could see why tech sheet says keep out of paint area, as you would with something like show and shine but don't believe or have heard of it ever causing a problem in a shop.
Kinda like all niosh approved respirators for Iso's say on package, not of Iso's.

Thanks for everyone's advice! Barry am I understanding you right that you don't wax at all other than a spray? Also if I had a customer using say....mother's carnauba wax how often should they use it along with using a spray like final inspection before car shows?......I have always waxed with mothers about once every 4 months and used spray right before judges come around at a show!

There was a study done about 10 or so years ago with about 25 different waxes and all exposed to the same test the same as parking a car in sun for 9 hours a day and they all lasted 30-60 days.
If car driven only on weekends, it may last a year as long as car is washed with a car wash solution, wash with a dish soap and the wax is gone.
Really if car is waxed with a carnuba wax, there would be no need to spray a show and shine type product but would not hurt a thing.

I have waxed a couple of cars for inside shows, one four applications over four days but when show was done, took wax and grease remover to the car to get it off.
Did a Lambo for a guy, black and waxed crap out of it and gave him a gallon of wax and grease remover and said when show done, get wax off, car took 2nd in LA show and a guy from England made offer he could not refused, so he sold it and said tha't's his problem. 28 coats of lacquer, most likley went south in a couple of years.

26 coats huh Barry? You miss those days? :) Bet that looked deep. Saw a brand new black Ferrari Testarossa that Herschel Conway did for a guy back in 1991. I was just a kid hanging out in California for the summer with my Dad and I wound up in Bell Gardens at his place. Guy bought the Testarossa and took it straight to him for a repaint. He stripped it completely and repainted it . Man that thing looked deep. I got so excited by that, it really cemented the idea of doing this stuff for a living.

28 coats, did 7 a week for four weeks, car was a one of two with 1500 miles and perfect factory black, just old, he said show and I quoited him about the price of a new car.
In one day had 7 coats on and thought, no way can give back and charge this price and part of the deal is when working on car, I did not want to see him or hear from him.
Had about four days of work but had car for 6 weeks so price was fair to him in his book.
I felt guilty but when he did good in the big show and guy wanted it more then he did, I felt little better.

People don't understand that they paying us for our knowledge....not our hard work!!
