What exactly makes "high solids"

Recently finished painting my truck, cleared it with UV clear. I think that was my first high solids clear - not sure, prior to that I had used Matrix MS42 - I assumed "ms" meant medium solids, but then in their tech sheet it's referred to as a high solids clear.

Then I was surfing through another paint forum and they were talking about another companies knock off of a PPG clear that the forum hawks and they talked about it being high solids and mentioned the number 45%.

Is 45% considered high? what % solids is UV clear?

It's 50% if I'm not mistaken.
 
barry told me once. its either 52,54 or 58% something like that, i cant remember. i shot ms-42 many years ago. from what i remember its a higher solids clear. most medium solids clears i have used were 32-40% or so. its been many years since i have messed with a mid solids clear. i think most these day are high solids to meet the voc laws.
 
Technically what makes a high solids clear is what remains of the wet film as dry film after all the volatile components escape. The trick to high solids coatings is to maintain a low enough viscosity and have all the other desirable characteristics that come with solvent borne coatings, like just enough momentary flow out but not to the point of running, with the least amount of solvent possible. Having that control means having different solvents that escape at different rates.
 
The 42 clear has been a very good clear over the years and from memory around 49% like the universal around 50%.

45 is not high solids as our production clear is a medium solid at around 44%.
I have heard from about 20 shops that have used the 42 for years that it is now 42% since they sold out, not seen it to know but we have gotten a lot of new business because of this, so can only assume that's correct.
 
How do I know what clears. Have uv protection.that way I know next time I'm comparing diff brands

First why compare? You've found the best Paint Company out there with some of the best products available. Seriously. The prices can't be beat either.
Second, Barry would be the one to give the technical answer but suffice to say, unless the Manufacturer tells you there really isn't any quantifiable way to compare UV protection in Clears. SPI Universal has the most on the market if I'm not mistaken.
 
yes no way of knowing which clears have better uv protection. spi i can speak for. others, who knows. as i mentioned in your other thread, i have been using spi for prob 17-18 years now and almost every job i do has candy on it somewhere. i have seen jobs with universal that i did 15 years ago and they look as good as they did when i did the job. very little fading which candies are prone to. if you goto my website gallery in the link below, everything there is spi primer and mostly universal clear. i have alot of newer work on instagram as "xtremekreationspaint". anything automotive and alot of the wood work there is all spi.

You don't!!!
First UV additives are the most important thing and MOST expensive thing in a clear, so you better know who you are buying from!
If the company is not making the clear themselves you can bet your sweet bippy the UV's are minimal at best with from what I have seen out there giving the clear a 2-4 year life at best if driven every day.
Lack of does not affect the gloss or how it sprays.

At least 4 times a month I hear from a shop that will call and say the first time I sprayed your clear and it is the best or whatever, My standard statement is fantastic but I really want to hear what it looks like in 5 years or 15 years as that is most important to me.
Lots of scammers out there but it doesn't take long for the problems to show up.

Edit, just noticed you said IF they have them, they all have them or base will die in about 3 months if driven daily.
How do I know this? There was another scammer about 15 years ago, who compared his to PPG and was making the crap himself (not true)
You know we pretty much buy from the same major companies so if a salesman never been in there, probably BS.
So this guy was not paying his maker for his state of the art clear, so the manufacturer made a batch with no UV for spite, one shop in south GA had 70 some spot jobs come back starting at the 60-day mark as he was doing warranty work and used car work for a dealer or two.
The good news at this point in time one of the majors sued him and he lost everything.

Also, even a brand like PPG does not guarantee high quality. I had DC3000 on the hood of my wife's minivan, and it started dying within 5 years.
 
Mr. Kives is a control freak! He puts his name and reputation on every product he sells. If he didn't formulate it and make it, he won't sell it. That alone should make people appreciate the product. Maybe he needs to sponsor a race team to get recognition. My only complaint is that I seem to get the cans with extra amount of run additive. My paint gets more exercise than I do.

Well just remember I do not charge extra for putting runs in the cans!!!!
