What am I looking at?

I stripped my 1987 regal down to metal everywhere was pretty easy except the roof. It’s the only thing that doesn’t want to strip. I sanded with 40 and 80 grit and it’s literally laughing at me. This lacquer check is deep into the metal yet feels smooth. What’s my best route need to finish this roof up so I can get the car in epoxy what should I do?

You're doing a good job.
I just got done this morning stripping an underside of a 60-year-old deck lid with 80.
Not to scare you, but I learned this way in the 70s, I took a 24 grit, 7-inch air grinder and held it flat, and tried a 24 grit roloc, which cleaned it up perfectly except for a few of the corners.
I stopped as im waiting for some flappers and a few different ones to try next week as I heard they were the bomb.
If a few spots cant get, I will sandblast.
You might hear from people who use the flappers.
Or do a light blasting.
Or Ospho it.
Im sure you will get some good advice here; give it a day.

Cookie disc on a 4 1/2 angle grinder should clean that up.

I use these a lot. Last well and work well.

After razor blading the car, I use a Easy Strip disc like Chris recommends. I don't use that brand but, it cleans the metal removing any remaining paint and surface rust. Once that's done, go over the panel with 80 grit on a da.

I tried a strip disc yet it seems extra aggressive on the metal. I got 120 grit plaid disc also trying to figure out my best next move

I had always used the ones from Lehigh valley but there prices have gone way up from the last time I ordered a batch years ago. https://www.lehighvalleyabrasives.com/non-woven-abrasives-clean-and-strip-it-discs
prices look great on the Empire ones you linked. I had not seen that site before but will try them next time I need some.

The ones I linked to I use because they don't remove metal. Or very little. Much less than sanding/grinding, most of them are that way. That's why this type of disc is popular. Surprised you find it otherwise. What brand disc is that?

Got it sanded out just took forever
