Wetsanding and getting frustarted.

Painted my vette 2 weeks ago. SPI medium red covered by SPI universal clear. About 5 coats of clear. 3 regular coats and then 2 flow coats. Paint laid down nice. Some junk in it. Started wetsanding with 800, then 1000, then 1500 then buff. After each grit I squeegie the area and then dry it off and go to the next grit. After the 1500 it looks flat and ready to buff. After buffing some of the areas still have some orange peel. Gloss is great. It's getting frustrating to sand and then buff only to have to do it again. I have been painting for a long time. And have had this problem before. What am I doing wrong.

I can't believe you still have orange peel after sanding with 800!!
I usually get rid of it all with 1500.
After the initial wet sanding, did you dry it off and notice all the tiny gloss (dots) were gone?
You should have.
Once it's gone, it doesn't come back if it's cured enough to sand.
Are you sure it's peel and not wave you're seeing?
(just had to ask)

What JC said.
Here's a picture of orange peel still present after wet sanding with 1000 grit.
I'm one of those that uses a hard block on the initial sanding to get things flat.

Here's the same area with just a dust mark showing. You can actually see it in the upper center portion of the first picture.

Mine comes out the same. After buffing with Meguires 105 and a wool pad I can still see some orange peel. It's not right in your face, you have to get the right angle and light.

Runny coats after hard blocking thru grits.
Vette this smooth? It will be if u put it on thick enough to play.

I have had the same problem with wave if I just flooded it on. I have always been a deliberate painter, but with the really high solid materials, I have learned speeding up, choking the material down, backing up to 6 inches away, and putting it on just wet enough to flow works better for me. Getting heavy wave is really difficult to get rid of, especially with anything finer than 400. I found it easier for me to try and minimize it initially than sand it out, especially on a flow coat. 540, I have felt the same frustration thinking I had it flat only to buff and it look "bumpy".

I use 1000, 1500 and finish with 2000 before buffing. Try the Megs M100 and you won't ever go back to the 105.

I used to work my way up through the grits but find a 1500 6" disk on my random orbital followed by
a 2000 one before buffing gave me about the same results.
That's all I use anymore. It takes the wave out much better than blocking by hand.

Could it be that the paint hasn't completely shrunk and when you buff it the heat is curing it a touch more causing some shrink?

Did the car set out in the sun?

Maybe do your first grit, then let it bake outside for a few hours before going to the next.

Car hasen't been outside yet. It is not running now and is up on wooden blocks. I am not going to be able to get it out side until after I do some work under the car. I am putting a Holley Sniper on it and have to run a gas line and put a new tank in.

So I would like to use the car this summer. I decided to put it back together and work on the spots as I find them. Basically the car is perfect except for maybe 20 random areas. I can wetsand them down and polish the area as I go along. I am trying to show my wife the spots but she thinks I am crazy. You really can't see them unless you catch the fluorescent light at the right angle.
