Wetsanding and Buffing Boat

I have a 2005 Moomba wakeboard boat. It’s black so it has some normal oxidation but also has some scuffs here and there being a 15 year old boat. I want to wetsand and buff it. My question is does anyone know how aggressive I can get with my initial cut? 2000 Grit pretty much takes out the oxidation but some of the scuffs needs to be more aggressive. I’m not as familiar with gelcoats as I am clearcoats that are on modern cars. Any help would be appreciated.

gelcoat buffs very easily and will go by a completely different grit scale than we use with paint. generally the finest you would sand gel to is 1000 grit finishing film. anything over 1000 is completely unnecessary. i have never been to a boat manufacturer that even has anything over that. typically you can start with whatever grit you need to. 400 etc, then go up to 600 then 1000. from there use gelocat compound with wool then a polish with foam. most boat companies will use 3m gelcoat compound followed by finesse-it 2 for the polish step.
