Waterborne paint

Went to an Body Shop Association meeting last week. Heard mention that the waterborne incorporation deadline was set back a couple of years, till 2015. There was more mention about 2.1 solvent paints, nothing definate though.

I don't have a typical booth, and have very little air flow so i would have to make some changes.

Crash, I think you would look good, standing there with your wifes hair dryer between every coat of base!

chicken little and the sky is falling. i've been hearing how it will be all that is available since the late 70's. if it were true i dont think the majors would be spending r&d money on low voc base.

which majors? matrix is the only decent line, transtar is okay, and the rest as i remember are all enamel bases(omni, limco,im forgetting maybe one more). soooo.

Standox is one toner away from having bases that are HAP's compliant. The new toner is supposed to be out in a few weeks. Don't know about the VOC content though. Their waterborne has more toners that have HAP's then the solvent based.

The voc's are not addressed in the new 6H ruling. However, on the east and west coasts that may be an issue too. In my area, 150 miles north or south there are voc restrictions but not in my area. So, we really can't make a blanket statement about regulations.

This is not the 6h ruling we are talking about. This is the voc laws which are in effect in certain parts of the country now and slowly making their way through the rest of the country. This is the whole reason for the development of waterborn and low voc solvent base. Both you and i arent affected right now but eventually we will. Its comming sooner or later. Your standox will eventually be discontinued. According to my jobber, basf is discontinuing diamont and glasurit 55 the end of 2012 early 2013 so other than limco basf wont even have a solvent available.

Well I was not going to say anything but the SPI red is Voc compliant, if I mix up old batch that was 4.6 and new batch 2.4 you would not know what was in what gun, except for smell.

the only good thing being an old fart. i will not have to mess with this junk . i'm not a house painter.

I tell you, the big shop across the street is slowly phasing out the waterborne now and reverting back to solvent! they dont even wear their advertising "green" t-shirts anymore. Reason? Production. They can't get them out the door fast enough because of dry times, and believe me, they've invested a ton into waterborne and converting their booths. They have to turn 30-40 cars a week just to pay the bills.....pretty heftly load around HERE. For some shops waterborne works...but from what i see there...extremely high volume, it doesn't work well. could just be them though!

Jim, had no idea about basf doing that! I tell you though....that is gonna hurt if these other smaller and probably a few majors, have success with the low voc bases. Just so much time and r&d has been put into solvent basecoats and its proven moreso than waterborne...i dont see how you just give it up because cali says so.

AAE, that is pretty much true for all the high end major lines (6H ruling)....well...except for dupont. According to my jobber, their HAP's list is PAGES long! lol. But sikkens, standox, rm, spies and the others are about the same with that one toner from what i'm told.

From what i am told they are making a low voc solvent but will be distributed under the limco brand. Hopefully its not a cheap crappy enamel like the rest of the limco line. I would like to see them rework the diamont and stick a limco label on it.

AAE, your right about the 6h ruling being about HAPS not VOCS. As a on-site painter, if your basecoat system is haps free and can be varified by manufacturers documents, you can apply for an exemption which would remove any 3oz. cup or 3 sided booth rules for you. Clears and primers in general are haps free.
