Trunk lid prep questions

Hi guys thanks for letting another newb to the forum,. I've gotta say thanks for all the help and guidance as i work through my first restoration project on an 87 ss monte carlo, my first car, and ive been able to held onto it.

My question is regarding my trunk lid as the top was hand sanded before i got it and has a decent amount of surface rust. I can sand it down again but it seems like.small amounts of rust are down in some groves should i use something like ppg dx520 and dx579 to ensure its clean before epoxy?

My other question is im already in a hole with the bottom side because it was soda blasted, i was told to do a couple cleaning steps water/vinegar then that dx579 then dx520? Anyone got better advice as far as prepping for spi epoxy.

Thanks in advance

Im also wondering can i just sand the inner side and then after wipe down move to epoxy?

I wouldn't use any sort of acid treatment on that trunk lid. I'd use a black cookie stripping disc on it, then DA it with 80 grit. They come in a variety of sizes and attachment types. I like the 3 or 4 inch ones that I can fit on a mandrel and a die grinder. They get into crevices better than the ones that attach to a 4 1/2 grinder. Here is a link to what I'm talking about:

As for the bottom if it has surface rust use the cookie disc there too. Being that it has been soda blasted I would simply wash it first with water and detergent. Scrub it good then rinse it really well, dry it and then go over it with the cookie disc. I have epoxied directly after using the cookie disc (in limited access areas like the underside of a trunk lid) but most of the time I will hand sand with 80 grit. Just scratch everything, no need for a block just use your hand.
