Thanks Barry/SPI, Success!

I solved my fisheye problem (air line contamination) and dove in to my first base/clear application this weekend. I hit it with 3 coats of prospray with proper flash times and after an hour I shot some intercoat for the stripes and it looked like a petri dish, the metallics were going everywhere. Needless to say I panicked and thought, "there is no way but I will give it a shot" and called Barry - he actually answered the phone! He talked me out of the tree and the rest of the project went perfectly. I think the combination of the drop coat and being a little heavy handed with the intercoat caused my problem.

I guarantee there is no other product on the market I could make a 6:00 saturday tech support call and actually get some! SPI has a customer for life.

Now all I have to do is get the trash and peel out of it and flow coat/cut/buff and I can call it complete. Thank you everyone on this board who has helped me with my silly questions, I will put the finished product in restorations when I get it done.

Looks great, should look like a million bucks after the sand and flow coats!

I used a devilbiss GTI millenium 1.3 for base and an LPH400 1.4 for clear. I need to sack up and get more aggressive with the LPH, I am still too afraid of runs. I accidentally slowed down on one of my spoilers on the last coat and it laid out like glass. The LPH is really slow compared to everything I have used in the past but it is easy to control. I bought the gun on ebay with a 1.3 tip and used it for small parts but bought a 1.4 for the overall - much better with the 1.4.

The silver was prospray and the black was hok that I bought to fill a free shipping cutoff on an order. I will say the prospray is 1:1 so it laid out really well, covered in 2 coats, and I had no problem at all controlling the metallics. the hok is 2:1 and went on kind of lumpy and barely covered with 2 coats, I will use prospray next time for all base. I don't know if I am the best to go to for recommendations though, the last time I did a car it was with centari single stage enamel!

Like I said, thanks Barry! SPI was a great find on this project and the end product is going to exceed my expectations - this car started out as a "driver" but as you can see.............

Great job. More proof that fantastic results can still be accomplished in a garage with plastic suspended from the ceiling.

I still want a nice booth though. LOL

the prospray is very forgiving isn't it . i shot the code 16 in prospray and it laid together great.
you did an awesome job on it. now take your time doing the buffing. as papa always said " it's a cinch by the inch but hard by the yard ". this was my brides car back in the 80's .teachers revenge.jpg

Right after the overspray was gone I took my wife out to the shop, I looked like a kid who just made his first turd and her first comment was "what's this" as she pointed to some of the trash.........talk about deflating! She wasn't mean about it, she just didn't get how many hours it took to get to this point, a booth would be nice so the as sprayed product is better to show off. Guess I'll have to wait until its buffed, then she'll get it.

I must say, these products are miles ahead of the crap we used to use. You had to get the spray right and there was always a flaw that you had to live with.
I may have to call in a relief pitcher to help me with the buff, looking at the contours of the hood gives me cold sweats...........I have a friend who has a million hours on a buffer, I will probably have him tutor me a bit and have him handle the tricky areas.

That looks great, it gives me hope as I am about to start on the same. Results like that certainly speak volumes about the products and help that you can receive here

Believe me, there are many people on this site that have had to call on Barry in the middle of shooting something. He just takes it is stride. I think he pretty much knows when I am getting ready to shoot something, and he makes sure he is available for the phone call.

Thank you everyone on this board who has helped me with my silly questions,

no question is too silly..especially with results like that the silly questions show results! with buffing, edges and corners are the danger zone, and its always good to stop and take a break earlier than later. losing focus on this last step is counter productive. i think everyone here has burned through clear more than a few times... youll be fine...
