tekna gun

Anyone have a recommendation on the Tekna by devilbiss. Looking at model 703675 w/7e7 cap. Comes w/1.3 and 1.2 needle set ups, dig air valve , and cup adapter. Can get this for $320. Would like a gun to use for both bases and Spi univ. Clear. Thanks for any advise. Larry

I have the Tekna Copper with the 7e7 cap but mine came with the 1.3 and 1.4 tips. I use the 1.4 for base and clear and its a very nice gun with a good sized fan. It is also very easy to clean.
I have only used it for one project so far and that is this Harley Tank in SPI black base and Euro clear both shot from the Tekna. Here's a picture "as sprayed" after my 3rd coat of clear:

Not sure yet if it lays the clear as nice as my Iwata LPH but it may just be me needing to get used to the Tekna.

I love my tekna copper for clear. I found the best setting for spraying clear(for me anyway) is 40psi and 2.5-2.75 turns out. here are some 55 chevy parts I shot a few weeks back...

This is 4 coats of UV clear at the above settings.

The base on these parts were shot with my devilbiss PLUS 670 and so far that is the best base gun I have ever used.. I would love to get my hands on a sata 3000hvlp, but I'm not spending the money for something I dont use every day.

I have found those setting works for any HIGH solids clear i have shot through it. I recently had to spray some crap nason spot clear(496-00) and those setting did not work(not even close!). I had to back it down to about 28-30 psi and open the fluid tip all the way to get it to lay out nice.

That is the thing about the copper and a thicker hs clear. You really have to bump the pressure up. Even with a 1.4.

I still use my w400 because that's what I'm used to and am comfortable with but the Tekna does do a nice job.

wow, thats really nice work. We didnt have any luck with the Tekna. I will have to see if I can get 40 psi to the gun. Probably need to buy bigger airline, we were lucky to get it to 32. what is your compressor running at to keep 40 at the gun?

The tech sheet on the Tekna Copper calls for 16-30 psi. I was at 26 psi when I shot base and clear. 40 psi seems a long way off the chart but I haven't used it enough to say for sure.

How does the Euro compare to UV concerning solids?

I have an 80 gallon quincy 325. I run a 1/2 in line and hi flow fittings.

Next time. Try 30 and go from there. What was your fluid needle at? Start with 2.5 turns out.

Not till now. Looks interesting. I've tried lower psi and the clear just doesn't atomize the way I like it too. So I shoot it at 40. And I like the results. With ppg high solids I'll put the 1.2 in and shoot around 35 and it lays out slick. But with the Spi clears I always have to bump it up some with the 1.4.

I see on that site the psi they recommend. But what about the fluid settings. I never run my guns wide open with a high solid clear.

Here is PPG2021 with a 1.2tip, 4 coats @ 35psi

Before stripes: I cleared the red base first then sanded and applied the stripes because the red is a tri coat and I didnt want to risk it.

Not trying to flood you with pictures, just showing my real world results with this gun.

Again, I dont run my gun wide open on the fluid tip and doing that has allowed me to get a tighter peel on the clear and less thane wave.

So what I am hearing is you guys generally like it for hs clear with the 1.4 tip. What about for bases such as HOK.

I tried shooting a silver base through it and it wasnt pretty. I havent tried since. I bought it as a clear only gun. I will say that i had to use my devilbiss PLUS recently to shoot some base in a pinch and that is now my new base gun full time. Surprised the hell out of me, but it rocks with a metallic base. I used to use it for clear and it did a great job with that also.

I like my lph400, but my shooting style seems to work better with the devilbiss guns. Maybe I try to move too fast for the lph400, I dont know.

I'll also add, I have a friend who works for BASF and he concluded through his own testing that the copper is a good gun for clear and waterbased basecoats, but it struggles with the lighter metallic solvent basecoats.

The pro lite is a much better base gun. All I use for base now. I ditched my lph's. That's how good it is.

The w400 is a totally different gun than the lph. It is more like a sata rp but isn't as fast as an rp. Much better for clear especially on bigger jobs.

I'm down to just 3 guns now. My w400 for clear, tekna pro lite for base, and the copper for an all around gun. I spray alot of epoxy through it...solid base coats...etc.

I've heard the prolite is a great base gun. I've been kicking around the idea of listing my lph with the 1.3/1.4 silver.orange and purple caps for sale.. I just dont use it anymore.

I was told by the customer service rep at devilbiss that the copper 7e7 air cap is the same as the prolite TE20 air cap.

Just some FYI.

ok, thats what I figured. Guess I need to get rid of the reducer at the end of the drier thats down to 1/4. I guess I can try just with the 1/2 line after the reducer but I doubt its gonna make it.

Thanks

Jeremy, what PSI do you run the W400 at? Is it really that much better than the LPH? I think I would have to hide that gun from the air quality nazis...

I guess I should clarify it is the w400lv. It is compliant. I run it about 28-30lbs trigger pulled.

I just think the lph was way too slow when doing large all overs. I'm not a fast painter but I don't put my nose in it either.
