Tape out dirt and runs.

I just finished the second coat of clear, now look at top center of the orange one, first coat I got a black piece of trash, I folded 3/4 inch of tape sticky side out and with weight of tape pulled the black out.
Let flash 15 mins and did a normal 2nd coat to finish, did not need to load clear up to cover.
Now if you have a run, then as shown I do the same with 2" tape but you may need to use 2 or 3 new pieces for a normal run.

I bought on line but mine are steel bought about 20, 15 years ago and don't remember.
They are called speed shapes and come in steel or plastic.
On amazon also.

You had an older post talking about the tape trick I ran across some time ago. I cant tell you how many times I've used it. Great tip that has saved me a lot of headaches.

I never get any dirt or runs in anything I paint...
If you believe that I have a nice bridge to sell you that I'm sure you would love to buy.

LOL on tech line about 2 years a go a guy called bitching about one of our the clears he had used for first time.
Been painting 25 26 years and never had a run before but got one with your clears.

Dang i been painting 46 years and i had one just yesterday, good thing I make paint and don't paint for living!!

I don't understand people sometimes. Who has the time to call you and complain about getting a run???? So in this guys mind a run is the fault of the clear not the painter? Tells you a lot about that guy right there.

I dont get many rude calls and whats funny is most of them turn into good friends on phone and as a customer after awhile .
Really if i look at how many calls and texts i get a day, the less then a handful of these types of calls a year are nothing.
I also understand the callers frustations as prices gone through the roof with the majors and there is no customer service to perhaps vent once in a while.

Most Refinish Jobbers can get them as well, just gotta ask. I know Axalta Jobbers have them.
Yeah, its funny, I was at my jobber last saturday and he had the shapes sitting on the counted painted different colors. i though, awesome, finally found them. I asked to buy some and he said everyone asks that but he didn't have any for sale, try amazon he said. o_O

btw... when using tape to lift off a run it helps if it's still wet but not too wet, way before it tacks off for sure. And if you get a hard edge on the tape track, you can very lightly use the tape again to feather the edges and then hit it with clear. Ive done it with solid and metallic SS too.

I don't think I was even a teenager yet when I heard the tape trick for runs & sometimes trash.
Like anything else , a lot can be learned from people not so great at their trades and how they try to fix them. If I learn from a mistake without having made it (YET), now I'm smarter. I think anyone new at something that has had a good first experience & thinks it's easy needs to step back & learn all the what can go wrongs they can before they happen to not be tripped up later.
