Swirls

SPI UC ...4 months old..never seen daylite yet..blocked 800,1200,1500,2000,2500...all looks great except swirls...black base..having a hard time with swirl removal.. using 205 and CSI on a da buffer with a black 3 m pad...how do I know if I'm just making new swirls or not affecting the current ones ,? Buffing seems to do nothing but help the gloss a little.. swirls still remain.

Did you start with a wool pad? I like to go over the initial wool pad buffing with an orange chemical guys foam pad with compound before going to the polishes. Sometimes it's hard to get the heavy swirls left by a wool pad out without this step. My guess is the swirls are coarser than the polish and pad you are using will remove. Think about it as skipping from 1200 to 2000. The 2000 will have a difficult time removing the coarse 1200 scratch.

Yes, wool pad with 105...yellow lake country pad with 105 ..black pad with 205...think I should go back to 105 or 205 with orange?

I haven't personally used the 105 or 205, so I don't know how much cut the 205 has, but I stay with the orange pad until the last step because it will cut the swirls out from the previous step. The black pad has very little cut. The swirls you are seeing are probably coming from the yellow pad, and the jump is too big between it and the black pad. I would try an orange pad with the 205, then finish with the black.

After you do what Texas suggested, if you still have "hologram" swirls or spider web scratches this is the stuff I have used over the past few years and it works very well. This would be considered the final step. 3M Ultrafina used with the Ultrafina pad. Works especially well with black. Removes the hologram and spiderweb scratches. In general I'm not a big 3m fan but this stuff works
Remember that especially with black everything needs to be clean and free of dust etc. Keep the surface clean, use high quality detail microfiber cloths. Keep them clean. Any grit, contamination, etc can reintroduce scratches back onto the surface.

Thx guys...think I made some progress...cleaned w W& G....turned off fan. After cleaning, it was depressing how little I had accomplished .couldn't get an orange pad before weekend..not available local..got a new black pad and went at it with 205 on regular buffer again...I could start to see some progress and cleaning it didn't bring the swirls back..I am definitely not getting them all out, I thought maybe I was just trading swirls for swirls. I will try the products recommend when I order next week. Thxs

ive done quite a bit of paint correction and some new paint buffing using the twins and a porter cable7424 DA. lake country orange pads through the whole process. i personally didnt see a reason to switch from the orange pads between the cut and polish. going from a compound to the less aggressive polish AND going to a less aggressive pad didnt make sense. i always had great results. the pic is a 97 with a bit of replaced metal and full repaint with UC. the pic doesnt do it justice.
i dont use the 105 any more after being turned on to m100. it blows 105 out the door. using it witch a rotary and twisted wool pad, theres just about no reason to polish.

ill add- using the DA is/was very time consuming when doing cut/buff. typically 2 or 3 passes over each section

Exactly...before reading this thread, nothing I did made it any better....I think I got a good plan now...I'll know when my order gets here...gonna hit SEMA this year, may be a couple of weeks before I can try

This is black base and universal clear after 600-2500 grit and cutting with Menzerna 400 and a black pad on a rotary. I have wiped down with w&g remover in the past, I have started using foaming glass cleaner after buffing and it seems to work well to remove residue.

I believe I could be happy with that !! Looks great

I have it all blocked back with 800 now for 3 more coats of universal. I will eventually finish it with Menzerna 3800. I really like the menzerna compounds, That door literally took 5 minutes to buff out.

Update..got the orange pad and some v36 for the black pad..orange pad helped but still had issues...I think some of my problem is /was speed and pressure on the da buffer...I slowed it down and put nothing but machine weight on panel and it helped tremendously. I don't think all the compound in the world would will help if I don't get the technical part figured out...but it is getting better...thx,s all.
