Supernova VS 5000/5500RP?

i bought supernova ws400 1.4 almost a month ago. this gun require a smart adjustement and u really need to understand what is going on. i still didn’t tune it to the point where i would like it. the fan is huge, but the speed is so slow. took a 5000rp yesterday and by turning just a fluid a lil in got almost what i wanted. for now i really regret of buying supernova

by the way, people, what do you think about w400 bellaria? im thinking about going back to it as a main clear coat gun. to me it has the same speed as 5000rp just i lil bit smaller fan. right now this gun cost ebay brand new from japan with shipping under 200$.

Serjik you've got a terrific gun for clear now. No gun is going to make you a great painter unless you have the techniques down. You just need to work on your technique like I said to you in the PM you sent me. Proper overlap, gun distance from the panel, correct speed for the gun and settings you have. As to what you asked me yesterday, overlap is just that overlap. Each pass needs to overlap the previous pass the same. As for wetness, spray clear how you want it to look in the end when you are finished.. Never spray dry tack coats. two coats for Collision Repair, three if you are going to buff collision type work. This is where you have to figure it out for yourself how "wet" is correct and how wet is too wet. Observe what the clear is doing as you are spraying. Ideally you want to see it "fill in" as you are making a pass. I can't explain that any better you will have to observe that for yourself. After each coat look at how it looks. If it's too dry you need to slow down or make sure you are properly overlapping. If it has runs or looks heavy and saggy you need to speed up. Just takes practice. Keep at it, use the right techniques and it will "click" with you sooner or later.

As Chris said, pay particular attention how the clear is going on as you're spraying regardless of the gun or settings you are using, and adjust technique accordingly. To me , that is the most important advice you can get. The first coat should look like it's finished, and you just add to that instead of trying to correct it. I'm using a supernova 1.3 alot lately for universal, and it looks just as good as it does sprayed with the lph400 1.4, but the technique is a little different. Learning to adjust to different materials and spraying conditions is more about adjusting technique than which gun or settings are being used, IMO.

Yeah, I've read my thread over and over. And other threads. This isn't the absolute only reason I'm trying a new gun, I also find myself spraying quicker than I should, having to slow myself down. I have read the Sata is a much faster gun, so I figured I'd see if it matches better with the way I spray. Worse case scenario, I can always resell it and probably not take much of a hit since we have a pretty good discount at our warehouse.

Having owned a 5000b RP and supernova and lph400 and pro lite and can tell you this much if you are like me you like painting fast and pretty close to the panel. You will like the 5000 more than the other guns, I would suggest getting a 1.2 as the 1.3 is too fast. It just hoses material on. That being said, unless you manage to get runs (never happened to me) the material being hosed on will be nearly flawless, regardless of technique. The biggest advantage using the SATA gives the painter is that the gun does the job for you. Your responsibility is making sure the paint is the right color and mixed properly, the same goes for clear, and for opening up your wallet to buy the gun in the first place. It literally does the rest of the job for you.

Keep it clean and when you clean it be mindful of the black air ring thingy (might be the fluid nozzle im not sure) which sits underneath the air cap. You can and should remove it for cleaning, but it's made of pretty lame plastic. Be very careful removing this for cleaning as it tends to get stuck if you tighten the air cap a little too much the black air thing I am talking about will be very hard to get off for cleaning. I broke one and had to replace it.

The sata is a great gun I found 17psi at the gun worked very well I tried pressures up to 25 with no problems at all. The more air you give the gun the faster you run. It produces quite a lot of overspray but whatever.

I hated my supernova it was a 1.3 I hated it I sold it and to this day remembering the way it sprayed I still hate it. I can feel the raw emotions lol. My lph400 is quickly heading that direction as well. I wish I still had my 5000, if and when I get another I will get a 1.2.

After 3 months of using supernova I actually love it. It's completely garbage below 29-32 psi. It's bad on thin clears, but on high solids like euro 4:1:1 it's just awesome. As Chris said , it's great gun, needed just to get used to it. Also bought pro lite with te20. Great gun as well. 5000rp is great for clear as well. Having these 3 guns and spraying with each of them enough and I can't say any of them is superior to other in spraying. For now it's only a question which one is better sitting in the hand.

That's my current setup and I love it. Pro lite as a sealer/ additional clearcoat gun, 5000 hvlp for base and supernova 1.4hd as a main clear. The whole setup cost me around 2300$. My old lph 400 was 500$ and the difference in finish is maybe 10 percent lol.

i have a 5000rp with a 1.8 and i feel like its too slow sometimes lmao! actually i am spraying a waterbased poly with it so different animal than automotive. i honestly wish it came in a 1.9 or 2.0 since the material does have some body to it.

Does anyone have a direct comparison? Experience with any?

I just want one gun to help me spray universal clear. I have the LPH400 and can get it to spray euro and production perfectly, but no matter how much I play with my air and fluid settings I just can't get the same with UV. I've tried everyones recommended settings and tried doing small adjustments on my own. I've been just spraying Euro lately because I can get it "perfect" out of the gun. 1/2" air hose, high flow fittings, 5HP compressor with 60 gallon main tank & 40 gallon assistant tank, regulated at the gun, 130 at the wall.

I have a recommendation for you with the lph400, the fitting on the bottom of the gun I bored mine out with a couple drill bits working up to 5/16.

I am using a 3/8 "T" fitting and female coupling.

I regulate at the wall rather than cheat down the air at the gun. At the gun I have a cheapy cheater valve regulator which I modified. I bored out the air passage to 1/4" (doesnt seem to want to go bigger) and removed the cheater valve so that its just a psi gauge rather than an actual regulator. Thus I have free flowing air (mostly) coming into the gun from the wall.

From the wall I think i have it set at 60psi which produces about 20 psi at the gun trigger pulled. I have a lot of air hose probably too much 50-60 feet but thats the only way i can make my setup work. Small compressor doesnt like extension cords and what im shooting is 40 feet away.

You want to talk night and day difference i went from hating the gun to LOVING it. Try my mods and the lph400 will amaze you.

Well the lph400 is already a legend gun, but my opinion is that 5000rp and ws400 and pro lite are 10% better for clear, than lph400, but again, just my opinion and really can be different to people because experience sprayed with gun is more important than just a spray gun itself. I know a guy who sprays all his clear with 5000 hvlp and he gets great results.
Do you have purple cap for lph400? It sprays metallics so easy! Any difficult metallics color is effortless to spray with purple cap! After spraying base with different guns I just realized that I can't spray metallics well without lph. So now I'm pushing myself to avoid lph400 because I really want to get skills on metallics, don't want to lph400 to do my job lol

Talk about hosing it on what pressure do you spray with that 50psi? LoL

Lol just about 25psi. The gun is actually ised just for this special waterbased poly and i am spraying alot of sqft at a time. It actually spray this material about the same speed as a hb primer through a 1.8. I always get a odd look from people though when i tell them the gun is for clear and its a 1.8. Haha

How big is fan? Half meter?

Dude my sata 5000 could fill my whole garage with choking overspray in seconds. Whole garage mind you. I had converted my garage into a booth with furnace blowers sucking the air out you couldnt light a cigarette despite feeling no moving air and still after a couple panels i had to keep a flashlight handy to see what i was doing. Thats with a 1.3. A 1.8 would make a spray booth look like a night at the roxbury all you need is some dancers in gogo boots and youre set lol

I finally got around to using it on a couple panels. The Sata sprays the universal as well as my LPH sprays euro, so I'm happy! Definitely fits my spray style better... I've only done a couple small pieces but very little orange peel so far. I need to get another Luma III for it, my shop lighting sucks and if I can't see my spray laying down, I'm basically guessing. Holding a flashlight in one hand currently!

Also bought a Orange and Purple nozzle for my 400. Having great luck with the purple, laying down coarse aluminum without any tiger striping!

Sprayed a bunch more with the Sata... love that gun! Everything I shoot lays flat. I haven't spent much time trying to fine tune it, but I imagine if I tinkered with my pressure and flow a bit I could get it even better.
