sunmight finishing film

has anyone used this stuff? if so just curious to hear what you think.

I'll give my limited review. i bought 2 boxes of 1500 just to try it out and compare to the eagle yellow i always use. i have to say that i am truly impressed. sunmight so far for me has yet to disappoint with any of their products. i was using it side by side with eagle yellow on the same project and found that it lasts 2-3 times as long and it cost 15 bucks less per box over the eagle yellow. this stuff really resists clogging up better than any paper i have used. it just keeps going and going. what i was doing is taking eagle yellow 1000 and cutting probably 70% of the peel out then finishing it off with 1500 sunmight to get the clear 100% before i went on the blue bufflex wet. the only drawback i found with it is that it is a very slow cut compared to eagle and 3m. it is on a more rigid plastic film so it seems to cut flatter than eagle. it could be that its taking longer because its cutting the surface flatter or it is just in fact a slow cut. i really cant say. i will say because of that though it seems to cut more shallow and its easier to work those 1500 scratches out. you guys know i am a big eagle fan but i think when my yellow film is out i am going to switch over to this stuff for awhile to give it a more thorough test but so far i am really liking it.
 
I am currently running through some sunmight, 1500,2000,3000,5000. So far I like it.
 
is your 3000 finishing film or is it some type of foam/wet disc? how do you like that grit?
 
3000/5000 are both foam wet discs. I am on the fence honestly. I think they do pretty good. The last time I used them I went at it abit longer with both grits and they seemed to leave a nice finish.

The first time I used then I didn't give them enough time to work and I wasn't impressed.
 
I know you're talking discussing Sunmight finishing grits but, since the beginning of my project I've been using Sunmight course grits 80 and 180. I've been satisfied with their performance.

Jim I thought you were using Assilex for 1500.

I do use assilex as well. I have 2 different parts of the boats i paint. On the horizontal parts i switched to 1000/1500 dry like i posted above. I can get away with it because the clear lays out much flatter. On vertical surfaces i sand out 100% of the peel and dust with 1000 then move to assilex for the 1500 step. The vertical surfaces arent as flat because of the artwork under the clear. The 1000 just cuts flatter plus its a huge flat area

yes i have used sunmight gold and green film from 120 grit up to 400 and its all been great. every bit as good as 3m, maybe a little better. like i said, i have never been disappointed with anything ive tried sunmight

I've been using the green Sunmight. What I've been doing after stripping existing paint with a razor blade is, go over the panel with Habor Freight 80 grit ( 50 pack for $5 dollars) to get primer film off, then I go over the panel with the green sunlight to get an even same color scratch. So far so good. Obviously the HF 80 grit is junk but, it serves me a purpose.

are you using the sunmight 1500 wet like the assilex?

I cant find SUNMIGHT 1000, 1500 PSA Rolls for Blocking.........I dont undertand when You use
Finishing Discs and when you use LINEAR Blocks long blocking ???

I’m an idiot so take this as such.
I think you use the blocking in an incremental manner.
Epoxy prime….block with the longest practical block ( contour withstanding) 180 grit to identify high/low
hammer/ dolly the highs, and fill the lows.
Epoxy again, and block with ( possibly 220) if you were close enough to justify a reduced grit.
Hopefully your close enough for turbo prime to block with 320 for single stage or 400 for metallic
The 800-3000 grits are a leveling tool for finishing the top coats ( clear or single stage)
This is over simplified and hopefully clarifies the use of finishing grits.
