Stripes on single stage

Backyard Hack
I am planning to use black single stage on a 70 Z28. Was thinking I would block the single stage with 1000, apply the stripes with white base and then spray universal clear over everything. Does this sound like a good way to go or is there a better way?

Thanks,
Don

The original coat was single stage...sounds like his plan would work.....what am I missing?.

so if your going to clear the whole thing then i have to ask why you would bother with ss. just do a base/clear. ss will build higher so the edges of your stripes will be much heavier.

The stripes would be basecoat on top of SS, they wouldn't build that much. But I do wonder why use SS in the first place if it has to be cleared later.

I am not clearing the whole car, only the panels with stripes. I used SPI single stage on my last project and got hooked on it.

so the car is going to be 1/2 cleared. some panels cleared, some panels not cleared? somehow that just seems like it could open up issues of panels not looking the same. maybe not when its nice and buffed out but down the road as it ages. i dont know, maybe im just over thinking it. i havent ever mixed on the same job where panels are side by side.

Ok, I was under the impression single stage is just clear with color added so it would be fine. Maybe I'll call the tech line tomorrow. I already ordered the black single stage so no turning back... :). Plan was to panel paint all the black, assemble, apply the base stripes and then clear.

oh you will be fine as far as adhesion and everything working. it is basically clear with pigment. you wont have any problems BUT ss and clear do look different especially as they age and get some use on them. now maybe i am just splitting hairs here and in the real world maybe it wont be noticeable. i have no idea. as i said i have never intermixed like that. if it was me though i would just clear the whole car instead of just the striped panels. i did some work on a black ferrari a few years back and someone decided to do a repair in the middle of a panel. they used black ss and blended it out but the panel was clearcoat. you could see it plain as day. a black circle in the center of the panel.

Hey Don. You've likely seen pictures of my Camaro nose el camino before. It has parts in both bc/cc , ss, & ss/cc, though none is spi yet. From pictures you can't tell, & when all clean & buffed it's still hard to tell. But as Jim says, when they age;;;;;;;;;;. The single doesn't stay as clean with age, but can look truer black in some lighting.
I'm personally starting out next with the black spi ss myself, as I'm doing more metal mods than I have time for & need to complete sections in stages as time allows, rather than repaint all at once. For a new complete paint job, I'd agree all ss or clearcoated. Another thought though if you're not trying to bury the stripe outlines under clearcoat & sanding, you could try stopping the clearcoat line right at the outer stripe. then sand just enough to flatten most of edge & buff all together.

By the way, you talked me into just checking out this site for myself on a pro-touring .com pm when asking you an spi question, so thanks for that. Been my new favorite site.

Hey JL. I chose single stage in part because I assumed it would be easier to repair. This car will be a hard driven pro-touring car and will likely get a good amount of cone rash and stone chips. I will decide on clearing the non-striped panels after I see how it looks. Car will be garage kept most of the time so I'm not too worried about the paint ageing differently.

You are right, this is a great site. Helpful folks with a lot of knowledge.

Thanks,
Don
