Static issue..

Been having an issue for years now, but last night it happened and it reminded me to post and ask about it. Are there any anti-static wipes that are ok to use in between coats of base and after sealer? I painted a bumper cover last night and the second I tacked it off holy balls it was like a magnet. I wiped it down with some waterbased cleaner but i have to tack in between coats and I cant put the waterbased cleaner on basecoat.

How do others deal with this issue on plastic parts, or any parts in general.

I don't know about plastic grounding but for metal I keep a ground braid connected between the car body and a nearby electrical panel ground at all times.

I use Sontara Anti-Static Wipes PS3975SWP on bare plastic bumpers, and then avoid excessive tacking between coats. I don't know what would be appropriate while basecoating. Usually I will seal and put one coat of base while prepping the rest of the vehicle, then nib out the trash. Most of it comes right at the sealer coat. After that, the part usually settles down if it doesn't get messed with too much.

use ammonia free glass cleaner. you can wipe base down with that and will not harm the finish

I experimented years ago grounding the paint gun. Never noticed a difference but my booth worked less than desirable. I should play with it now that it's dialed in better.

ever touch an antennae or your sisters er after walking along the carpet :) your body will ground out and pull the static from the part. i learned this from an old corvette guy. we grounded the body but he always touched it .

OK once again everyone will gasp but....
I've been using Endust on clean shop towels for tacking
for over 10 yrs now and it works better than tack cloths and
removes all static. Never a problem.
Makes plastic completely static free.
Most of my work is bumpers.
No more sticky gooey tack clothes for me. Won't use one ever again.
Now everyone go argue to why it's wrong and I'll
keep laughing how much better it works.
And NO I never get fish eyes from it.

Maybe you should explain your technique. I tried this one time after reading one of your posts and swore I would never do it again. LOL

jc has been doing this as long as i remember . i think the trick is not getting too much on the rag .

In the winter the air is so dry static everyware, my golden retrivers even light up at night. Oh forgot about the endust trick.
