Spraying upside down

I am a newbie to car painting and soon I would like to spray epoxy on the underbody of my 68 Cougar. I do not have access to a lift or rotisserie, so I will have to do a lot of this from on my back. Is there a type of hlvp gun that I can use with this type of method? Any advice would be appreciated.

I have been using the Devilbiss Dekups and they will allow you to spray upside down. I have been real happy with these. There are other brands of disposable cup systems that work well also. They come in different sizes and can be fitted to a detail gun as well as a full size gun.

d cups or 3M PPS, you turn the gun upside down, pull the trigger and all the air is sucked out of the cup and the paint stays in a bag. There are plenty of PPS adapters for whichever gun you own. If they are not listed, just figure out the thread size of the cup and get the little adapter. If you can get the PPS gun with removable tips on ebay for about 100 if you cant find the right adapter. If you choose the gun, try a place called Zoro for the new air caps.

DeKups is a better value. I use both the PPS and DeKups. I like the Dekups liners, they are a little more pliable that the PPS so they collapse easier, allowing better flow right to the point at which the bag is sucked flat empty. They are also cheaper than the PPS.

I admit I do use PPS for my final work though, sealer, base and clear. I like the little filter screen in the lid face. I filter my paint anyways but its a little added insurance.

Not that I know the answer to this but it's possible you could consider using a foam roller for the underside. I have thought about this myself but have not researched it yet. Good luck.

It allows you to use a zip-lock bag in your cup.
I use the one quart Zip-Lock brand freezer bags.
Much cheaper than all those cups and stuff.
And works great.

JC,

I have PPS on my LPH80 mini gun so I get how pps works, but how do these EZ liners work? The bag fits inside the standard Aluminum cup? Do you puncture the bag and form a seal with with the collars?

Aha, found the official Devilbiss "user manual". Doesn't look like it will work in an LPH400. No adapter will fit.

The Devilbiss liner system works good with any gun. I considered using them for my underside as well. But ended up building a wood rotisserie from pics I found on youtube. I had most of the wood lying around so the whole thing cost me less than 100 bucks. Real easy to work on the bottom now. I'm having the bottom dustless blasted next wednesday weather permitting. Then I"ll be shooting some black epoxy. Here's the link to my rotisserie.

Bentrustynail, the DeVilbiss DeCups adapter for my Iwata LPH 400 is an 11. There are DeCups adapters for most guns. The only exception I've run into is the LPH-80 -- I had to buy a PPS adapter 31 and a DeCups DPC-500 to convert it.

Make sure you completely cover yourself including hands, head and eyes. Wear a disposable paint suit cause it will get all over your clothes. Extra lighting also helps.

Im interested in exactly how you use the freezer bags in place of the cups and lids. Can you give a little explanation on how thats done?

You don't replace the cup for a bag you put it in your cup with an adaptor plug punched through the bag into the hole of the cup, put your material in the bag zip it closed and put the lid on your cup. That way is far cheaper then buying the Decups.

I was referring to the Devilbiss Cup that goes inside the gun cup, not the gun cup. You are not saying use the plastic bag inside the Devilbiss Cup are you?

Yes, I have both an OMX (plastic) and GTI (aluminum) Devilbiss and the bag goes into the guns respective cup held in place with a plastic retainer pierced thru the bag into the cups hole.

Old-ish thread but interested again. The EZ-liners don't seem to have bushings that work for the lph400. It's an old system and fits older guns sharpe platinum, devilbiss finishline with the plastic cup, smaller iwatas, nr92 sata stuff like that. Nothing for the aluminum Iwata 400 cup as far as I can tell.

As far as the often quoted "dekups is cheaper than pps". I priced up dekups and pps lid/liner kits on amazon and BOTH work out to about $1.88 per pair of consumables.

32 dekups for $60 or 50 pps for $93 from memory.
