Spraying base coat

I have a question about the SPI dark red base coat. How wet should it be put on? What should it look like when dry maybe a satin or more flat.
I was spraying the doors yesterday and got to close in a couple of areas and I guess you would say it has orange peal. About how for from the nozzle to the
target should you have the gun. is it always about 6 to 8 inches no matter what your spraying epoxy, base or clear. I have the Iwata LPV 400 with silver cap and 1.4 tip. I have the door sanded down with 1000 grit. Is that OK or should it be sanded with a coarser grit?

Thanks for any help
Dave

If im not sealing I base over 600, spi base should be satin gloss after flash it has more gloss than any other base ive used, 6-8 inches is fine. If your getting bad orange peel and gun is at proper psi and distance play around with your fluid there is a sweet spot, I use an iwata ls400 and its around 3-4 turns out.

I hope this helps

Yes it does help and thank you .
One more question when I said I sanded with 1000 I really didn't clarify that well it was the base that I sanded to get the orange peel out and decided to just sand the whole door and shoot a couple more coats of base so should I go back over the door with 600 or is the 1000 OK?

Thanks again
Dave

this a quote from the perfect paint job in the SPI tech manual----

If your base isn't perfect
"After two coats of base the vehicle should sit overnight, and then do any minor wet
sanding with 800-1500 grit sandpaper to remove any orange peel or trash. Apply the next
two coats with 45 minutes of flash time in between coats."

so you should be fine
