SPI Medium Red and Dark Red look the same

S

A couple months ago, I got paint chips for Red, Medium Red and Dark Red. At time, it looked like the Medium and Dark reds were the same exact color.

Last week I ordered another set of paint chips and got the same thing. I cannot tell the difference between the Medium and Dark red colors.

I asked a couple people from our art department and they said the same thing.

What's going on here?

I've attached a couple pictures of the paint chips in different lighting. See if you can spot the difference between the colors.

On the second picture where you stacked the chips like a tall building the difference is pretty obvious. But it may be the way you took the photo.

Have you looked at the paint chips outside under natural light?

I have a set of chips where is very easy to tell them apart.

I ordered a set of chips as well and the difference was obvious, especially when comparing to the red already on the truck I am painting.

The color differences in the paint chips are consistent with what I've seen. First pic, the medium red is the top one and third from the top on the right. I have family members who are color blind, but I think they can still distinguish shades, but maybe you have a form of shade blindness. However, having shown them to other people who can't tell the difference either is a mystery.

In the first picture, the two that ksungela identified as medium red are actually normal red. The other 4 chips in that picture are dark red and medium red (2 of each). And those 4 chips look identical to me and everyone I've shown them to.

The second picture was taken at a bad angle and the shadowing makes the 4 med/dark red chips look more different than they actually are.

I feel like there is a mix up in the paint chips at SPI...

I just sprayed this tailgate with 3 coats of SPI Dark Red over gray 2k .
The second pic has the interior door panel next to it that is Corvette Rally Red (according to the truck owner) and I believe was only offered from 1965-1968. It may match another GM Red but I don't have any means of verifying that.

I had my buddy with an app on his phone that can look at a color and return a hex value.... the medium and dark red paint chips consistently read in the same range of hex value while the normal read was clearly different.

I recommend you call and talk directly to Barry or Andy and see if they can help you sort this out. The three chips I received were clearly different one from another.

Ever since I made the dark for a particular match reason, I've have heard this it is too close to medium.
No longer have and don't need.
been working on mars red for Mercedes that's a big swing, if it gets, where I want, will bring out.

You still selling the dark red or you will replace it with the mars red

I still feel like there is a mix up with the paint chips over at SPI. I got chips for all three reds a couple years ago and don't recall having this issue. But with the chips I've recently received, medium red and dark red are the same color.

I'd like to hear if someone at SPI could go and look at the chips they are mailing out and see what is going on (I texted earlier today and waiting to see what happens).

I recently received samples of the reds also and can't tell the difference between medium red and dark red either....ill post some pics of them in the sunlight tomorrow.

Barry, I may need another gallon of this Dark Red I am using now. Please don't change it midstream in my project.

Any jobber with a camera can read it and they will have 7-9 like reds and all are from dead match to blendable, it was a chip problem at a quick glance and we were about to make more as out but are not.

I'm still confused, is dark red going away? It's still on the price list.

It was the exact color I wanted for my pickup. :(
