SPI Matte Black with LPH-400 1.3?

T

Hello Friends! I guess I did not do enough homework on spraying the SPI Matte Black. I have always had tremendous success spraying all the SPI products I have used. I have the car ready to spray. I have to shoot it tomorrow. Here is the problem. I have an Iwata LPH-400 with a 1.3 tip. I just now noticed on the Tech sheet the 1.4 tip requirement. In researching it more thoroughly, I noticed it MUST be shot with 1.4 according to many on this forum. What can I expect with using the LPH-400 with 1.3 tip? Is there anything I could do to reduce the possibility of problems using the 1.3? Thanks for your help!

Thank you Barry! Any tips on spraying it or just like I am laying clear? Also, the customer wants as black as possible with as little sheen as possible, I was thinking 6:1, or should I consider another ratio?

6.1 is most popular, 8.1 flatter but he cant have it both ways as flatter =s
Greyer.

Can I de-nib between first and second coat? I really hate doing this, but I am spraying it at my friends shop, which is literally his general automotive repair shop. It is as clean as it is going to get, but I am sure it will have some dirt. I have always sprayed in a much more controlled atmosphere.

I would guess not, all you can really do is after done if a panel is dirty wetsand and recoat.

I think the best way might be to lay down some black epoxy as a sealer the day before, if there is anything loose around the vehicle, it will stick to the epoxy and can be nibbed out before spraying the matte black.

Southern Polyurethane's Matte Black is AMAZING (as is ALL your products)! Shot it tonight. Below is a Before and After. Please keep in mind it is just a driver car, not like what I usually shoot. Definitely not ideal circumstances, or even close, lol! So, disassembly, taping, and such was done by the owner (my friend Cory that I mentioned earlier). He is EXTREMELY pleased! He posted pics to SPI's Facebook page already. It has a little dirt, not much at all. I did not try to de-nib, I didn't really have to. It does spray a little different that anything I have sprayed before. It's transformation from wet with a gloss to matte was incredible.

The finished pic looks a little blotchy on the door and a couple of other places. I can assure you it is not, it laid perfectly, with zero issues! Oh, and I went 6:1.

He was going to matte the factory wheels. But, he is in the automotive aftermarket industry and there is large trade show this weekend in Texas that he is going to. I think it is a Keystone trade show? He said he is going to see what he can pick up there. He can usually pick up things at a huge discount and a lot of vendors have their new items on display. Anyone have any ideas on new wheels? He was asking for input.

I do have a quick question for Barry or someone with experience spraying the SPI Matte Black. On the back hatch there is one small spot with noticeable dirt. Can I sand the matte this morning and reshoot a couple of coats? I know the tech sheet says only 2 coats originally, but can I add 2 after I sand? The hatch is very small and not much surface area.

Re deck lid, you sure can, if minor enough just use a grey scuff pad for speed and ease.
LOOKS fantastic, 6:1 is just a perfect mix.
