Spi intercoat and Dupont base

I'm spraying some Dupont base (Chroma premier) this weekend and would like to spray a coat of intercoat over it to check for good metallic coverage and evenness. I have to use DuPont's base maker reducer in this. Anyone have any experience with this combination? Spi intercoat over/under Dupont base

Is there a specific reason you think you need to do that? Are you blending out onto an adjacent panel?

It will work fine, just use urethane reducer in the intercoat, not the basemaker.

I've used the spi intercoat several times on blend panels than sprayed DuPont chromabase, perfect blends every time. I thoroughly like the intercoat for heavy metallic blending. I don't use duponts basemaker either, I just use spi reducer and never had any type of reactions or what not.

I understand epoxoy primer, filler, polyester spray filler, high build primer, sealer, basecoat, then clear. Where does "intercoat" come in to play? Also, if your going to use a non metalic base color, can you wetsand the base coat before clear coat or if you have dirt in it and can do it without sanding thru the color?

we mostly use intercoat to mix flakes and powdered candies. We have used it on top of base coat between true fire graphics.

For the most part, you dont want to sand your basecoat until you get clear on it. It causes variations in color and usually adds scratches, even if you are careful. If you can pick out the dirt and dab some touch up if it goes down to primer before the clear you will be much better off. Even if you end up with a little crater that is basecoat color, the clear usually fills up little ones. Basecoat is incomplete and sanding it will show in the clear, especially if its a dark color. If you dont want to use an intercoat clear, you can get a cheap fast clear and sand everything down together.

Good to know. I will be using one of the SPI Clears on my first project. Thanks for the response.
